TV-Series
Description
Kaname Ougi is introduced as the leader of a small Japanese resistance cell, having taken on this role following the death of his friend, Naoto Kouzuki. Before becoming a resistance fighter, Ougi was a teacher, a profession he often admits he was better suited for than leadership. He is a man of average height with dark brown hair and grey eyes, and he is almost always seen wearing a distinctive red headband. As the series progresses, he becomes a central figure in the Order of the Black Knights, serving as its Deputy Commander and later as its General Secretary, before ultimately becoming the Prime Minister of the United States of Japan.

Ougi’s personality is defined by a deep-seated care for the well-being of others and a strong sense of empathy, particularly for his fellow Japanese citizens, who are referred to as Elevens under Britannian rule. He is fundamentally honest, sincere, and humble, which earns him a great deal of trust and respect from his comrades within the organization. However, he is also portrayed as a reserved individual who frequently lacks self-confidence and questions his own ability to lead. Despite his high-ranking positions, Ougi prefers to protect rather than to command, a trait that another character, Diethard Ried, later notes makes his leadership role a "miscast". His primary motivation is the liberation of Japan and the protection of his people. He initially places his faith in the enigmatic Zero, believing in his cause and his rage against Britannia.

Ougi’s role in the story is pivotal, acting as the moral anchor and a bridge between the mysterious Zero and the other members of the Black Knights. His most significant relationship is with Villetta Nu, a Britannian soldier he finds wounded and suffering from amnesia. Despite her origins as the enemy, he nurses her back to health, gives her the name "Chigusa," and eventually falls in love with her. This relationship becomes a major source of conflict, as his devotion to her clouds his judgment and makes him susceptible to manipulation. His bond with Zero, Lelouch Lamperouge, is complex. While he is one of Zero's earliest and most loyal followers, his trust is repeatedly tested. Ougi seeks a leader who treats people not as pawns but as individuals, a standard he feels Zero may not always meet. This underlying suspicion, coupled with the revelation of Lelouch's Geass power and his identity, leads Ougi to orchestrate the Black Knights' betrayal of their commander in exchange for a promise of Japan's independence from Prince Schneizel.

Throughout the series, Ougi undergoes significant development. He begins as a reluctant resistance leader, transitions into a trusted deputy under Zero, and eventually becomes a key decision-maker who turns against his former leader. His journey is marked by a struggle between his desire for a just cause and his personal attachments. Following the failure of the Black Rebellion, he is imprisoned but maintains his faith in Zero. His later actions, driven by his love for Villetta and his suspicion of Lelouch, lead him to betray Zero. In the final stages of the story, he realizes the full scope of Lelouch's plan, known as the Zero Requiem, and is filled with regret for his earlier betrayal. By the series' conclusion, he marries Villetta, who bears his child, and is elected the Prime Minister of a liberated Japan, though he later resigns from the position.

In terms of abilities, Ougi is not a strategic genius like Lelouch or a master combatant like Tohdoh. However, his strength lies in his balanced nature and his ability to unite people. He has a talent for integrating various opinions and maintaining the cohesion of the organization, which is why he is respected and followed by the rank-and-file members. He is a capable pilot of Knightmare Frames, having operated Burai units in several key battles. His true value is as a stable, ordinary presence that can mediate between the extraordinary individuals within the Black Knights, providing a relatable and human perspective that grounds the group.
