TV-Series
Description
Odysseus eu Britannia is the First Prince of the Holy Britannian Empire and the eldest son of Emperor Charles zi Britannia, which places him first in the line of succession to the imperial throne. In appearance he resembles his father in his younger years, with brown hair, a small goatee, and blue eyes. Despite being the crown prince, he is considered an ordinary and unremarkable figure compared with his younger half-siblings, particularly the Second Prince Schneizel, and Lelouch in particular regards him as mediocre.
His defining traits are gentleness, timidity, and a strong aversion to conflict. Unlike many members of the imperial family, who are ambitious and aggressive, Odysseus shows no real ambition or malice. He is indecisive and easily flustered by responsibility and pressure, and he openly prefers peaceful negotiation to military escalation. This makes him easy to manipulate and leads stronger-willed relatives such as his half-sisters Guinevere and Carine to dismiss him. His pacifism is genuine: he considers Euphemia's massacre within the Special Administrative Zone of Japan a clear mistake and expresses regret when Britannia's use of force becomes excessive. He is also portrayed as a socially minded politician, being the leading advocate of the Citizens Rehabilitation Program, which granted amnesty to certain criminal groups in exchange for community service. His gentle manner makes him a popular figure in Britannian media.
In the story, Odysseus first appears as a minor presence during the funeral of the Third Prince Clovis. During the Black Rebellion, he presides over the court conference in the Emperor's absence but gives only vague responses and refuses to authorize troops for Area 11, fearing that mishandling the situation could cause the uprising to spread to other Areas; he is visibly relieved when Schneizel volunteers to deal with the crisis himself. In the second season, Schneizel arranges a political marriage between Odysseus and Tianzi, the young Empress of the Chinese Federation, as a scheme to bring the Federation under Britannian control peacefully. Odysseus, fully trusting his brother, does not notice the scheme and agrees to the union. The wedding collapses when Li Xingke leads a coup and Zero abducts the bride, but Odysseus bears no resentment toward Tianzi and states that he would prefer to settle matters with the Federation peacefully.
His key relationships reflect his reliance on stronger personalities. He places complete trust in Schneizel's political abilities and is content to let his brother take charge of difficult affairs. Lelouch, his half-brother, has a low opinion of him. When Lelouch proclaims himself the 99th Emperor, Odysseus opposes the move, but Lelouch's Geass forces him and the assembled nobles to submit. Under Lelouch's rule the imperial family is stripped of its status, and Odysseus is reduced to a common soldier in the Britannian military. During the final conflict, the imperial capital Pendragon is annihilated by a FLEIYA warhead launched from the Damocles, and Odysseus is caught in the destruction.
Odysseus possesses no notable combat or strategic brilliance. His abilities lie mainly in diplomacy and conflict management, and even these are overshadowed by far more capable figures around him. His development is that of a well-meaning but weak-willed heir who is consistently outmaneuvered by his more talented siblings and ultimately swept away by the upheavals he had tried so hard to avoid.
