Description
Hatake Kakashi is a former elite ninja of Konohagakure, known across the shinobi world as the Copy Ninja or Kakashi of the Sharingan. He has closely cropped silver-gray hair, a masked lower face that conceals his features, and a ninja headband worn tilted over his left eye, which hides a transplanted Sharingan. As a member of the Hatake clan, he is the son of the legendary Sakumo Hatake, known as the White Fang of Konoha.

Kakashi’s background is marked by profound loss that significantly shaped his character. As a child, his father committed suicide after being shamed by the village for choosing to save his comrades over completing a mission, an event that led a young Kakashi to become cold, rigid, and obsessively fixated on following the ninja code. Despite this, Kakashi was an extraordinary prodigy, graduating from the Ninja Academy at age five, becoming a chunin at six, and achieving the rank of jonin by age twelve.

His early life as a jonin led him to be assigned to a team under the future Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze, alongside his teammates, Obito Uchiha and Rin Nohara. During a mission in the Third Shinobi World War, Kakashi adhered strictly to his rules, prioritizing the mission over his injured comrades. Obito, who was more impulsive and compassionate, strongly disagreed, stating that while those who broke the rules were scum, those who abandoned their friends were worse than scum. This moment changed Kakashi. He chose to save Obito but lost his left eye in the process. As a dying act, Obito had his newly awakened Sharingan transplanted into Kakashi’s lost eye, bequeathing him a powerful gift and the lesson of valuing one's comrades. Shortly after, Kakashi was forced to kill Rin to prevent a catastrophe, a trauma that caused both he and the presumed-dead Obito to awaken their Mangekyo Sharingan.

This history informs his personality, which is a complex mix of deep-seated trauma and a deliberately nonchalant exterior. In the present, he is known for his seemingly lazy and laid-back demeanor, often arriving late for appointments with flimsy excuses, such as getting lost on the path of life. He is frequently seen reading the risqué romance novel series, Icha Icha Paradise, authored by Jiraiya, and is intensely private, rarely revealing his face or his true emotions. However, beneath this casual veneer is a shrewd, calm, and exceptionally capable leader. He is deeply loyal to his students, believing that teamwork and protecting one's friends are the most important values a ninja can hold. He carries the guilt of his past and frequently visits the memorial stone to mourn his lost friends, a habit that is the real reason for his chronic tardiness.

This personal philosophy directly fuels his primary motivation as a teacher and protector of the next generation. As the leader of Team 7, consisting of Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno, Kakashi’s role is to hone their skills while instilling in them the value of camaraderie. His first lesson is always his infamous bell test, designed to force students to work together above all else. Throughout Naruto Shippuden, his role expands from mentor to key strategist and frontline defender of the village. He plays a critical part in repelling Akatsuki, including the battle against Kakuzu and Hidan, and leads a division as a General of the Allied Shinobi Forces during the Fourth Great Ninja War.

His key relationships are central to his character. He shares a fierce but friendly rivalry with Might Guy, who considers him a lifelong friend. His relationship with his students evolves as they surpass him, with Kakashi taking immense pride in their growth. The most defining relationships in his life, however, remain with his old team: Minato, Rin, and most significantly, Obito Uchiha. The entire ninja world’s fate becomes intertwined with Kakashi’s unresolved past when Obito is revealed to be the primary antagonist behind the Akatsuki, forcing Kakashi to confront the ghost of his lost friend.

Kakashi undergoes significant development across the series, confronting his survivor’s guilt and achieving closure with Obito. He is temporarily killed during Pain’s assault on Konoha but is revived by Nagato. In the climax of the Fourth War, after losing the Sharingan that Obito gave him, Kakashi briefly obtains a complete Susanoo when Obito’s spirit lends him his remaining eye power from the afterlife, allowing him to fight alongside his former student, Naruto, in the final battle against Kaguya Ōtsutsuki. After the war, he succeeds Tsunade as the Sixth Hokage, presiding over an era of peace and technological advancement before retiring and entrusting the position to his student, Naruto.

His notable abilities are legendary, earning him the moniker Copy Ninja. Thanks to Obito’s Sharingan, he has memorized and copied over a thousand jutsu, though his natural affinity is for Lightning Release. He is the creator of the Chidori, also known as the Lightning Blade, a concentrated electrical attack. After losing the Sharingan following the war, Kakashi later develops a new, non-reliant lightning technique called Purple Lightning. He is also a master of summoning his pack of ninken, or ninja dogs, for tracking and combat. His possession of a single Mangekyo Sharingan also grants him the use of Kamui, a powerful space-time ninjutsu that teleports anything within his line of sight to another dimension. Despite losing the Sharingan permanently, his keen strategic mind and immense skill continue to classify him as one of the most powerful shinobi in the world.
