Description
Danzo Shimura is a high-ranking elder of Konohagakure, the Hidden Leaf Village, and is known by the moniker "The Darkness of the Shinobi" for his covert and often ruthless methods. As the founder and leader of Root, a clandestine subdivision of the village's Anbu forces, Danzo operates entirely in the shadows. In the aftermath of a devastating attack on the village, he is appointed as the Sixth Hokage Candidate, though he dies in battle before he can be officially inaugurated.

Danzo's personality is defined by a chilling calm and unwavering conviction. As a young ninja, he was headstrong and eager to prove himself, developing a deep-seated rivalry with his teammate, Hiruzen Sarutobi. This envy grew as Hiruzen was chosen as the Third Hokage, a position Danzo secretly coveted. Over the decades, his experiences in constant war hardened him into a man who suppresses all emotion, believing that a shinobi must be a cold, calculating tool for the village's survival. He views the members of Root not as people, but as disposable pawns, branding them with cursed seals on their tongues to ensure they can never speak his secrets.

His primary motivation is the absolute protection and strengthening of Konoha, a goal he pursues through a consequentialist philosophy where the ends always justify the means. Danzo is convinced that only he possesses the necessary resolve to make the "tough decisions" required to secure peace, believing he is best suited to become Hokage and unite all shinobi forces under his control. To this end, he commits numerous immoral acts without a shred of remorse. He was instrumental in stigmatizing the Uchiha clan, isolating them from the rest of the village and ultimately orchestrating their massacre alongside Itachi Uchiha to prevent a coup. He also secretly revealed to the public that the infant Naruto Uzumaki is the host of the Nine-Tailed Fox, turning the villagers' fear and hatred towards the child.

Throughout the story, Danzo serves as the hidden architect of many of Konoha's tragedies. His actions repeatedly undermine the more idealistic approach of the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. Their relationship is the most significant in his life; what began as a boyhood friendship transformed into a bitter rivalry fueled by Danzo's jealousy. Despite this, in his final moments, Danzo reflects on their shared past, revealing a lingering, if warped, connection. His actions directly shape the fates of several key characters. He manipulates Itachi Uchiha, and his subsequent betrayal of his promise to protect Sasuke Uchiha sets Sasuke on a dark path of revenge that defines the latter half of the series.

Danzo undergoes little emotional development, as his convictions remain absolute until his death. However, his role in the narrative serves as a crucial revelation of Konoha's dark underbelly. He is a cautionary figure who illustrates how patriotism, stripped of morality, can become a monstrous force for evil. His death at the hands of Sasuke Uchiha is the culmination of all the hatred his machinations created, and he uses his last moments in a final, desperate attempt to eliminate Sasuke and his ally, Tobi, a selfless act suggesting he truly believed he was serving the village.

In combat, Danzo is a formidable and versatile opponent, primarily wielding Wind Release techniques that can cut through nearly anything. His notoriety, however, stems from his body modifications. He has a right arm infused with Hashirama Senju's cells and embedded with ten Sharingan, the ocular kekkei genkai of the Uchiha clan. This allows him to perform Izanagi, a forbidden technique that can rewrite reality, turning any injury or death suffered into a mere illusion at the cost of losing light in one Sharingan. This grants him ten minutes of effective invincibility. Furthermore, his right eye socket contains a stolen Mangekyo Sharingan belonging to Shisui Uchiha, which allows him to use Kotoamatsukami, a powerful genjutsu that can implant thoughts and commands into a target without their knowledge. Despite this arsenal, his arrogance and a slight lack of combat finesse compared to his political cunning ultimately lead to his defeat.
