Description
Queen Nehelenia is the primary antagonist of the Sailor Moon SuperS season and the leader of the Dead Moon Circus. She is a dark, regal figure who embodies vanity and a desperate pursuit of eternal youth. Her background reveals a lonely childhood: she was a queen of a cold, isolated asteroid, beloved by her subjects but lacking any true friends or family. This isolation caused her to learn to love only herself, which grew into an extreme narcissism. Her obsession with beauty began when she consulted an enchanted mirror that showed her a future in which she had become an old, wrinkled woman. Terrified by this vision, she became consumed with preventing that fate. In her desperation, she began consuming the dreams of her own people, who then transformed into monstrous servants called Lemures, and she founded the Dead Moon Circus to continue her quest.

Nehelenia's central motivation is to obtain the Golden Crystal, an artifact of immense power that she believes will grant her everlasting youth and beauty. The crystal is held by Helios, a priest who has taken the form of Pegasus and taken refuge within the dreams of Chibiusa. Nehelenia creates a manifestation of herself named Zirconia to lead the Dead Moon Circus in the real world while she remains trapped inside a magical mirror, a prison imposed long ago by Queen Serenity. During the Silver Millennium, Nehelenia appeared at the celebration of Princess Serenity's birth, and after a confrontation, Queen Serenity sealed her within that mirror. Before being confined, Nehelenia cursed the Moon Kingdom to fall before the princess could inherit the throne, a curse that ultimately brought about the destruction of the Silver Millennium.

In the events of SuperS, Nehelenia operates from within her mirror, directing Zirconia and the circus members to search for Pegasus by targeting the beautiful dreams of people in Tokyo. Once she learns that Chibiusa is the keeper of the dream mirror where Pegasus resides, she focuses her efforts on capturing the child. When she finally obtains the Golden Crystal and breaks free from her mirror, she attempts to use its power but is thwarted by the Amazoness Quartet, who steal the crystal and give it to the Sailor Guardians. With the combined power of the Sailor Team and the people of Earth, Nehelenia's spell is broken, revealing her true aged form. She retreats back into her mirror prison to restore her youth.

Nehelenia's key relationships are defined by conflict and manipulation. She is the dark mirror of Queen Serenity, and her ancient curse made her indirectly responsible for the fall of the Moon Kingdom. She views Sailor Moon and the other Sailor Guardians as obstacles to her goal. She has a particular connection to Chibiusa, who holds the dream mirror Helios uses, and to Helios himself, as the keeper of the Golden Crystal she covets. Her minions, the Amazon Trio and the Amazoness Quartet, are tools she uses and discards, though the Quartet eventually rebel against her.

Her character undergoes notable development. In SuperS, she is a purely antagonistic force driven by vanity and fear. However, in the subsequent season, Sailor Stars, she is freed from her mirror by Sailor Galaxia and returns to exact revenge. During this arc, her tragic past is more deeply explored: the loneliness and fear that drove her to madness. She captures the Sailor Guardians and renders Mamoru emotionally comatose, but when the Sailor Guardians show her forgiveness, she is ultimately redeemed. She is reborn as a small child, learning to form true friendships with her subjects, indicating a break from her former obsession.

Nehelenia possesses formidable abilities. She commands dark magic and can inflict powerful curses, as demonstrated by her curse on the Silver Millennium. She can shoot energy waves of darkness and generate spiderlike threads to ensnare her enemies. She is impervious to many physical and magical attacks. Her power is closely tied to mirrors, which she uses to trap others, to spy on the world, and from which she derives her strength. She is also able to drain the dreams and life force of others to sustain her youthful appearance. Despite her defeat in SuperS, her resilience allows her to return and play a significant role in the final season's narrative.
