Description
Golden Darkness, whose real name is Eve, is a major character originally introduced as a formidable antagonist. She is a being known as a transformation weapon, created by the scientist Dr. Tearju Lunatique, who is considered her genetic mother. Her "younger sister" is Mea Kurosaki, another product of the same program that created her. Golden Darkness has a youthful appearance, characterized by her long, straight blonde hair and dark red eyes. She stands 153 cm tall and her birthday is on December 24.
Initially, Golden Darkness is portrayed as a stoic, withdrawn, and peerlessly skilled galactic assassin who has fought like an emotionless automaton. Her primary motivation upon her first appearance is purely professional: she is hired by Lacospo, a suitor of Princess Lala Satalin Deviluke, to kill the protagonist Rito Yuuki. However, after encountering Rito and seeing his kind nature, which contradicts her client's description, she nullifies the contract. She chooses to remain on Earth under the pretense of still assessing him to kill him later, using this as an excuse to stay. Despite her cold exterior, she is not unkind. She hates perverted behavior and responds with violent force against anyone who acts lecherously towards her. She has a notable phobia of slimy things. Her favorite food, offered to her by Rito, is taiyaki, a fish-shaped cake, which she develops a strong fondness for.
As the story progresses, Golden Darkness becomes a central figure, particularly in the sequel To Love-Ru Darkness, where she is promoted to a main character. Her role shifts from an outside threat to a reluctant member of the main cast. She forms a deep and significant friendship with Mikan Yuuki, Rito's younger sister, who becomes the first person Golden Darkness calls a friend. She eventually enrolls in Sainan High School, integrating further into daily life on Earth. Her feelings towards Rito are complex and develop gradually. She is confused by the affection she begins to feel for him, showing moments of jealousy and warmth, such as snuggling next to him. While she insists he is still her target, it becomes clear that her emotional connection to him and her peaceful life on Earth are the true reasons she has stayed. Her creator, Dr. Tearju, also reappears in her life, working as a teacher at her school.
Golden Darkness's key abilities revolve around her unparalleled transformation power, also known as Trans-ability, granted by the nanomachines in her body. This allows her to change any part of her anatomy into various weapons or tools. She most frequently uses her long hair to form giant fists, swords, claws, and other implements of combat. She can also transform her limbs or even her entire body, allowing her to adopt a more mature form. Her skills are not limited to weaponry; she can also use her power for mundane tasks like cutting tofu. A significant drawback is that overusing this ability causes her nanomachines to overheat, leaving her weak and immobilized. She is also a formidable martial artist even without her powers.
In the Darkness storyline, a hidden program within her called "Darkness" is activated. This transformation is designed to turn her from an anti-personnel weapon into an anti-planetary one, capable of creating wormholes and manipulating matter. This plotline forces her to confront her own nature as a living weapon created for destruction, and her emotional attachments ultimately allow her to overcome the program's intended purpose.
