Description
Garaku Tsuchimiya is the father of Kagura Tsuchimiya, the main protagonist of the prequel anime Ga-Rei: Zero. As the head of the Tsuchimiya family, he is the inheritor of a powerful spiritual being known as Byakuei, a Ga-Rei (spirit devourer) that takes the form of a large white dragon or serpentine creature. This beast is bound to its wielder through a seal, and the connection is absolute, lasting until the master’s death.
Garaku is a man of few words and a stern demeanor, described as having closed eyes, a beard, and often wearing a yukata. He is a seasoned and powerful exorcist working for the Supernatural Disaster Countermeasures Division, a government agency tasked with eliminating paranormal threats. After his wife was killed in a battle against an evil spirit, Garaku became distant and focused entirely on his duty as an exorcist and on preparing his daughter for the burden she would eventually inherit. He left much of Kagura’s care and upbringing to his friend Naraku Isayama, the adoptive father of Yomi Isayama, which resulted in Kagura and Yomi developing a close sisterly bond.
His primary motivation is the fulfillment of his family’s duty and the protection of others from supernatural threats. However, he is also driven by a desire to ensure his daughter can survive the harsh reality of their lineage. He forces Kagura to train rigorously from a very young age, not out of cruelty, but because he knows that the wielder of Byakuei does not live long, and she must be strong enough to control the beast when the time comes.
Garaku’s most significant role in the story occurs during the climax of the prequel, when he arrives to save Kagura from a fatal attack by Yomi, who has been corrupted by a malevolent Sesshōseki (killing stone). He engages in a fierce sword duel with Yomi and unleashes Byakuei against her own spirit beast, Ranguren. Despite his power, the exhausted and corrupted Yomi mortally wounds him. In his final moments, lying in a hospital bed, he has a poignant and emotionally candid conversation with Kagura. For the first time, he apologizes for his harshness and distance, admitting he thought they would have nothing to talk about. He regrets the years he wasted and the burden he placed on her. He then transfers the seal of Byakuei to Kagura, giving her a small, exorcised Sesshōseki to wear as an earring to control the beast and bequeathing her the family’s ancestral power.
His key relationship is, of course, with his daughter, Kagura. While marked by emotional distance and stern expectations, it is ultimately a relationship of deep, unspoken love and sacrifice. His final actions serve to pass the torch to her, both in terms of power and the tragic duty of confronting Yomi, whom he was unable to defeat.
In terms of abilities, Garaku is a highly skilled swordsman and exorcist. His most notable power is the mastery and control of the Ga-Rei Byakuei, a formidable spiritual dragon used as a devastating weapon in combat. He is proficient enough to wield this creature in battle against other powerful spirit beasts. He is physically strong and capable of fighting evenly with the augmented and corrupted Yomi, demonstrating his status as one of the most powerful exorcists in the series’ setting.
