TV-Series
Description
Angela Blanc is a complex antagonist whose presence is felt throughout the first season of the Black Butler anime. She initially appears as a seemingly submissive and timid maid serving the cruel Lord Henry Barrymore at his estate, Houndsworth. During the Phantomhive household's visit, she is shown being physically and verbally abused by her master, which garners sympathy from Ciel's servants. However, this facade of a battered woman is a carefully constructed mask that hides her true, far more dominant and dangerous nature.

In reality, Angela is not a human maid but a powerful angel, and she shares a singular existence with another character, Ash Landers. Angela and Ash are two sides of the same angelic coin, with Angela representing the feminine form and Ash the masculine. This duality allows the entity to operate from different positions, with Ash often acting as the Queen's butler. While Angela pretends to be meek, her genuine personality is that of a dominatrix who derives pleasure from control, sadism, and torture. This is most evident when she captures and tortures the demon butler Sebastian Michaelis, an act that visibly excites her. She has a deep-seated need to be recognized as a woman and becomes enraged when Sebastian rejects her advances.

Angela's primary motivation is a fanatical obsession with purification. She views humans and other beings as inherently impure, corrupt, and stained by sin and negative emotions. Her mission, which she pursues with maniacal zeal, is to cleanse the world of this perceived filth by any means necessary, even if it means causing mass destruction. This ideology places her in direct opposition to demons like Sebastian, whom she considers the ultimate form of impurity. Her actions are driven by a twisted, angelic logic where cruelty and devastation are justified as tools for creating a new, pure world.

Within the story, Angela serves as a primary antagonist and a major orchestrator of conflict. She is the one responsible for the tragic fire that killed Ciel Phantomhive's parents, an act that set the entire plot of the anime in motion. She manipulates events from the shadows, appearing across several story arcs. In the Houndsworth arc, she uses her demon dog, Pluto, to cause chaos before gifting the creature to Ciel. She later sabotages a curry contest by providing a spice that drives the audience into a violent frenzy. In the Book of Doomsday arc, she kidnaps Ciel and attempts to rewrite his past memories within the Grim Reaper's library, believing she can "save" him by erasing his painful, impure history. Her ultimate goal is to burn down London in a massive purification ritual.

Her key relationships are defined by her goals. She has a notable obsession with Sebastian Michaelis, both desiring him and wanting to purify him, a conflict that leads to violent confrontations and her torturing him when she has the chance. Her relationship with Ciel is that of an antagonist seeking to remake him, either by rewriting his past or destroying him. She also has a close bond with her demon hound, Pluto, which seems contradictory given her hatred for impurity, but the creature's animalistic nature may be viewed by her as less sinful than human complexity. Her relationship with her male counterpart, Ash, is one of identity; they are two bodies sharing a single purpose and consciousness.

Throughout the series, Angela does not undergo a positive development but rather escalates her destructive behavior. Her plans become increasingly grand and desperate, culminating in a final, all-out confrontation with Ciel and Sebastian. In this battle, she and Ash are finally destroyed by Sebastian, who must unleash his full demonic form to defeat the powerful angel. Angela possesses notable abilities befitting an angelic being. She has immense superhuman strength, enough to crush steel and overpower demons. She can alter her appearance at will, shifting between her Angela and Ash forms and manifesting a true angelic shape with feathered garments. She also has the power to influence and rewrite human memories, as she attempts to do with Ciel, demonstrating a profound ability to manipulate the very essence of a person's identity.
