Description
Grell Sutcliff is a Grim Reaper, also known as a Shinigami, working for the Dispatch Management Division in the world of Black Butler. As a being who collects the souls of the deceased, Grell operates primarily in London during the late 19th century. Initially introduced while posing as the timid and incompetent butler to the physician Angelina Dalles, also known as Madame Red, Grell's true nature is anything but meek. This disguise as a butler was a temporary cover for a much darker partnership.

In terms of appearance, Grell is striking and flamboyant, with long, dark red hair, sharp shark-like teeth, and red-framed glasses Accessorized with a chain of small skulls. Grell has a powerful fondness for the color red, frequently wearing an outfit dominated by this hue, including a red coat that was taken from Angelina Dalles after her death. To complete this ensemble, Grell wears a vest, gloves, a red and white striped bow tied around the neck, and red and black high-heeled ankle boots. When in disguise as a butler, however, Grell adopts a far more subdued look, with brown hair tied back by a simple red ribbon and plain black clothes, appearing shy and clumsy rather than dangerous.

Personality is where Grell Sutcliff becomes most distinctive. Grell is exceedingly over-the-top, theatrical, and outspoken, often speaking with dramatic flair and making use of double-entendres and references to plays, such as comparing a personal conflict to the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. There is a deep-seated, ruthless bloodthirstiness to Grell, who possesses a strong predilection for the color red and believes that substances reflecting this color, particularly blood, are a key to achieving beauty. This violent nature means Grell is quick to resort to brutality to eliminate anyone who becomes an annoyance or a hindrance. Despite this lack of empathy for most humans, Grell can be a cheerful and doting companion when the mood strikes.

The character identifies as a woman, often referring to herself with feminine pronouns and expressing a desire for a physical transition, believing that a mistake was made in her assignment at birth. Her speech patterns in Japanese are highly feminine, and she becomes frustrated when others refer to her with male terms. Her motivations are primarily driven by a search for excitement and a rejection of the monotony of simply following rules. This is most evident in her initial partnership with Angelina Dalles, helping her commit the murders that would become known as the Jack the Ripper killings. Grell was captivated by the "certain woman" who was Angelina, feeling a sense of sympathy and connection that overrode the Grim Reaper code of neutrality in human affairs.

Grell's role in the story is a complex one, initially serving as a primary antagonist during the Jack the Ripper arc before transitioning into a more supportive, though still unpredictable, character. Key relationships heavily define Grell's actions. There is an intense and unrequited infatuation with the demon butler Sebastian Michaelis, whom Grell affectionately nicknames "Sebas-chan". Sebastian, however, finds Grell's obsessive advances repulsive and is far more interested in combat. Another significant figure is William T. Spears, Grell's stoic and perpetually exasperated supervisor at the Grim Reaper Dispatch, who often has to retrieve Grell after a fight and enforce discipline. Despite Grell's open flirtation with and admiration for William, he does not reciprocate these feelings.

Over the course of the narrative, Grell shows some development, particularly in attitude toward the duties of a Grim Reaper. At first, Grell was entirely dismissive of the principles requiring neutrality, as seen in the illicit partnership with Angelina Dalles. After a period of suspension for these crimes, Grell begins to show more respect for the job, at one point lecturing a fellow Grim Reaper, Ronald Knox, on the importance of soul reaping. However, this adherence is questionable, as Grell's impulsive nature still regularly leads to violations, such as attempting to kill a human despite being told it is forbidden. One of the key events marking Grell's change was a partnership with William T. Spears during their training, where a difficult mission led to a mutual understanding and the granting of their official Reaper glasses.

As a Grim Reaper, Grell possesses several notable abilities. The most distinctive is a custom Death Scythe, which has been illegally modified to operate like a large, roaring chainsaw, as Grell finds the standard scythe designs to be old-fashioned. This weapon can cut through nearly any physical matter. Furthermore, when it cuts a living being, it allows Grell to view that person's Cinematic Record, a visual replay of their memories, which is the primary tool Grim Reapers use to confirm a soul's time of death and its life story. When this chainsaw scythe is confiscated as punishment, Grell is temporarily forced to use a pair of children's scissors, which, despite their harmless appearance, are later shown to be nearly as sharp and capable as the original scythe.
