Description
Kakeru Kogure is a main character in the series, known as a classmate and childhood friend of the protagonist, Uta Yumeno. He is a teenage boy of average height with short brown hair and light brown eyes, typically dressed in casual, masculine outfits. His name suggests a sporty personality, as Kakeru translates to drive, run, or gallop.
In his early years, Kakeru was a mischievous and wayward boy who frequently bullied Uta. This behavior caused her to dislike him, and her friends were also wary of him as a result. Some time before the series begins, Kakeru comes to regret his past actions and makes a firm resolution to change himself. He evolves into a kind, remorseful, helpful, and gentle person. Despite this transformation, he retains a somewhat rough personality with a strong tendency to hate losing, and he can be clumsy when trying new things. He is also quite shy, which prevents him from easily expressing his deeper feelings.
Kakeru is motivated by a desire to make amends for his past bullying and to protect Uta, for whom he develops a strong crush. This romantic interest is a central driver of his actions throughout the story. He also participates in school athletics as a sprinter on the track team. Within the magical conflict of the series, he initially is unaware of the existence of characters like My Melody but becomes involved after an encounter with the villainous Kuromi. In his role as a Bunny-Eared Ranger, he wears a green costume and wields a weapon called the Sorry-For-Being-Awkward Beam.
Kakeru shares a significant and evolving relationship with Uta. Having known her since childhood, their dynamic shifts from one of bullying and resentment to friendship and romantic love. He is deeply affected by her feelings for another classmate, Keiichi Hiiragi, often feeling jealous. After many trials, he confesses his love to Uta and eventually becomes her boyfriend. He is also best friends with Jun, despite their contrasting personalities. Kakeru forms a close bond with Flat, a character who becomes his dream partner and often encourages him to be honest about his feelings for Uta.
Throughout the series, Kakeru undergoes considerable development, primarily centered on atoning for his past and growing into a more courageous and emotionally open person. He learns to understand Uta's feelings better, even when she is hurt by others, and he eventually gains the courage to confess his love and date her, much to the dismay of Uta's father. A running gag involving the character is his series of accidental or intentional kisses, often given to prevent others from kissing Uta; these recipients include Keiichi Hiiragi, Jun, and Baku.
