Description
Kyuo Ryu is a former member of the Septia troupe Phantom, a specialized unit in the warrior kingdom of Kuruda that tracks down and captures demon beasts for use in society. As a Septia, she inherited the warrior traditions of her people, particularly the hunting of demon beasts that terrorize the kingdom. Her grandfather, Jin Stolla, was the leader of the Phantom unit and is regarded as one of the most powerful Septias in history. She is also the grandniece of King Eva Stroll, the 55th Sevaar of Kuruda.

Kyuo's background is marked by tragedy. When the Phantom unit decided to hunt the legendary demon beast known as the King of the Moon, they underestimated its power. The beast's strength and regenerative abilities were unstoppable under moonlight, and it destroyed an entire village. The entire Phantom unit was wiped out in a single night. The next morning, Kyuo discovered the corpses of her comrades and buried them herself. This event defines her primary motivation: revenge against the King of the Moon and the preservation of her grandfather's honored legacy.

Personality-wise, Kyuo starts as a determined but somewhat insecure young woman. Feeling responsible for the deaths of her teammates and unable to avenge them alone, she initially tries to hire thugs in Kuruda to help her hunt the King of the Moon. However, her situation changes when she encounters Elle Ragu, Gau Ban, and Faury, who agree to assist her after Gau defends her from the thugs. Kyuo is willing to pay for their help, and she admits that she wants the demon beast dead, not captured—a desire that goes against the Septia's traditional role. During the hunt, she demonstrates skill in setting traps and using her chulinks, which are ring-like weapons that serve as focal points for Septia abilities and can be thrown or used like a whip. With the group's aid, she ultimately defeats the King of the Moon by pinning it with traps until sunrise, when its powers wane, allowing its destruction.

After achieving her revenge, Kyuo has no clear path forward. Elle invites her to join their group, and she accepts, becoming a constant companion. In the group, she is often portrayed as the weakest member, especially compared to Elle's and Gau's martial arts skills and Faury's talisman magic. This inferiority complex drives her development. She bears visible scars on both arms from mishandling her chulinks during early training. Determined not to be left behind, she eventually masters the Tomoway, a style of chulink-throwing and opponent-capturing that her grandfather was famous for.

In terms of relationships, Kyuo develops romantic feelings for Gau Ban, but Gau remains oblivious to her affections. Meanwhile, Scrib Lowengren, a Vaar who specializes in Open Skills and is Gau's rival, falls in love with Kyuo at first sight, creating a love triangle. Kyuo's focus, however, remains on Gau, and she continues to care for him from a distance. She also has a tense moment with Elle when she suspects that Gau might be more than a brother to Elle, but their quarrel is cut short by an attack on Kuruda.

Later in the story, during an assault by the warrior G (the 58th Sevaar), Kyuo places herself in danger to protect Gau, but she is badly beaten. Gau finds her near death and flies into a rage, attacking G. This event further spurs Gau's growth. Kyuo's role evolves from a vengeful hunter to a supportive member of the group, albeit one who struggles with her own sense of worth. At the end of the series, when Elle and Gau are exiled from Kuruda, Kyuo follows them from the shadows, determined to keep an eye on them.

Notable abilities include her expertise with chulinks, which she uses both as ranged throwing weapons and as trap-setting tools. She is also skilled in tracking and trapping demon beasts, as shown during the King of the Moon hunt, where her traps are crucial to the victory. Her later mastery of the Tomoway style significantly enhances her combat effectiveness, allowing her to capture opponents similarly to how her grandfather fought. Despite her initial weaknesses compared to the main trio, Kyuo's persistence and growth reflect her quiet strength and loyalty.
