Description
Norb is a Vodarac priest in the anime Eureka Seven. He is a powerful figure within the Vodarac religious order and becomes a key character in the later part of the series. His background is deeply tied to events from his childhood, when he was chosen to serve as the guardian of what the Vodarac believed to be their messiah. That being was actually the first Coralian girl, named Sakuya, who was spawned by the sentient Scub Coral. Initially Norb carried out his duties with solemn detachment, but he eventually earned Sakuya's affection by giving her a lotus flower. The two were believed to be destined to unite humanity and the Scub Coral. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, Sakuya was transformed into a giant lotus flower, and a Compac Drive materialized from her remains, becoming embedded in Norb's chest. This event granted him unusual abilities and left him as a lonely, enigmatic figure carrying the weight of a lost connection.
Despite his position as a priest, Norb's personality is unconventional. He smokes, eats unhealthy junk food such as pizza and chips, and rarely displays the solemn demeanor expected of a religious leader. He does not readily offer religious opinions even when asked, giving him a pragmatic and world-weary air. His motivations are rooted in his prophecy: he foresees that Eureka, a later Coralian in human form, and her partner Renton Thurston will pass over the Great Wall to the Promised Land and bring about the unification of humans and the Scub Coral. Acting on this vision, Norb becomes a guiding force behind the scenes.
Norb's role in the story is largely that of a catalyst and mentor. He is the main influence behind Holland Novak's decision to leave the Special Operations Force, after explaining to Holland the true nature of Dewey Novak's plan and the catastrophic consequences it would have for the planet and humanity. This conversation sets Holland on the path of protecting Eureka and opposing his brother. Later, Norb directly aids Eureka and Renton by using his powers to disable the barrier around his temple and channel energy to help them pass through the Great Wall. He remains in the temple to maintain this effort, sacrificing his own mobility for the mission.
His key relationships include his past bond with Sakuya, which informs his deep understanding of the Coralians; his prophetic connection to Eureka, whom he recognizes as the one destined to fulfill his prophecy; and his influence on Holland, whom he convinces to protect Eureka. Norb also interacts with Renton, sharing the story of his past with Sakuya. Throughout the series, Norb develops from a passive guardian of a secret into an active participant in the effort to reconcile humanity and the Scub Coral, though his personal isolation persists.
Notable abilities arise from the Compac Drive in his chest. He can shut off or disrupt other Compac Drives, manipulate the Scub Coral to raise barriers, and harness Trapar energy to use as an offensive weapon. These powers make him a formidable force, yet he uses them sparingly and primarily in service of his prophecy. His development is subtle: he moves from a figure haunted by a missed destiny to one who helps secure a new future for Eureka and Renton, finding a measure of purpose in guiding the next generation.
