Description
Okiyo, also known as Kiyo and referred to as Kiyo of the Breaking Up Temple, is a tanuki from Mimikiri Mountain in the animated film Pom Poko. She is the wife of Shoukichi and a central figure in the community of tanuki who resist the suburban development that threatens their forest home. Physically, she is a small, round tanuki who wears an orange vest with a yellow stripe along its lower edge.
Okiyo enters the story as Shoukichi's primary love interest, and their relationship grows into a marriage and a family. This domestic thread gives the larger conflict a personal scale, as the couple's life together illustrates what is at stake when the forest is destroyed.
