Description
Akeginu is a kunoichi, or female ninja, of the Iga Tsubagakure clan, serving as the dedicated bodyguard and closest confidant to Princess Oboro, the clan's young leader. She is chosen as one of the ten Iga warriors to represent her clan in the deadly competition against the rival Kouga clan.

Her personality is defined by a blend of genuine compassion and unwavering loyalty to her clan. As Oboro's primary attendant, she is protective and forgiving of the princess's gentle nature and lack of combat skills, often acting as a caring older sister figure. Despite her affection for Oboro, Akeginu's first and ultimate loyalty is to the Iga as a whole. When the ancient truce between the clans is nullified and conflict becomes inevitable, she does not hesitate to participate in the deception of her own princess, aiding her comrades in their plot to assassinate Oboro's beloved, Gennosuke of the Kouga. This illustrates the central conflict of her character: her personal empathy for Oboro is constantly at odds with her duty to her people.

In the story, Akeginu plays a multifaceted role as a guardian, a seductress, and a grieving avenger. Initially, she helps lure Gennosuke and his comrade Jousuke into the Iga village under false pretenses of peace, using her charm to manipulate Jousuke's desires. Her key relationships heavily influence her actions. Her fondness for Oboro is genuine, and she later risks the ire of her fellow Iga to preserve a flute left by Gennosuke, hoping it will comfort Oboro after the war's end. However, her most profound emotional bond is with Koshirou Chikuma, a fellow Iga warrior. She tends to him after he is blinded and falls deeply in love with him, though she never openly admits her feelings. Koshirou's death devastates her, transforming her sorrow into a single-minded pursuit of revenge against his killer, Kagerou of the Kouga clan. This quest for vengeance ultimately leads to her own death.

Her most notable ability is a unique and gruesome technique known as blood projection. By secreting her own blood from her pores, she can spray it onto an enemy to blur their vision or create a thick, obscuring mist to hide her movements. To maximize the technique's effectiveness, she often removes her kimono top to provide a larger surface area from which the blood can be expelled. In addition to this special power, she is a highly skilled swordswoman, proficient with a katana, and has demonstrated the ability to wield a kama, or sickle, in combat as well.
