Description
Kasumi Gyoubu is a member of the Kouga Manjidani clan and one of the ten ninja selected to participate in the secret war against the Iga Tsubagakure clan. His father, Renbu Kasumi, was sent as a peace envoy to Iga but was ambushed and killed. Witnessing his father dying was a formative trauma that instilled in Gyoubu a deep and burning hatred for the Iga clan. This desire for revenge was then frozen in time by the shogun's subsequent peace treaty, forcing his rage to simmer for years.
Gyoubu is a mountain of a man, characterized by his immense, muscular frame, bald head, small beady eyes, and a complete lack of visible eyebrows. He typically wears a simple, sleeveless white kosode tied with a black belt and matching white hakama trousers that end at his calves, often going barefoot. His choice of attire is entirely practical, as he must remove all his clothing to effectively use his unique abilities.
The core of Gyoubu’s combat style is a deceptive paradox: despite his enormous size, he specializes in stealth and infiltration. His primary ninja art allows him to merge his body with the surface of any solid object, such as a wall, floor, or the ground itself. By dissolving into the material, he can move within it undetected, launch surprise attacks from any angle, and become effectively invisible to his enemies. However, this power has significant limitations. To merge, Gyoubu must be completely naked and cannot carry any weapons, as only his body can phase into the substance. Furthermore, he gains no defensive protection while merged; any attack that strikes the surface he is hiding in will still harm him. When not using his power, he relies on his raw, brute strength, which he has cultivated since his father's death, capable of breaking bones with ease and throwing opponents great distances.
While often perceived as the strongest of the Kouga ninja, Gyoubu’s violent exterior masks a more complex personality forged by tragedy. His life is driven by the belief that his childhood weakness caused his father's death, explaining his relentless pursuit of physical power. This rage, however, sits alongside a capacity for friendship, most notably seen in the uncle-niece bond he shares with the young female ninja Okoi, whom he often takes hunting. His hatred for Iga is not just a clan loyalty but a personal vendetta, making him deeply skeptical of any attempts at reconciliation. He views Gennosuke Kouga’s trust in the Iga as a dangerous mistake.
Within the story, Gyoubu serves as a powerful and aggressive force for the Kouga. He is among the first to engage the Iga when they enter Kouga territory, and he constantly pushes for violent retribution rather than diplomacy or waiting for orders. While the manga and original novel provide less backstory for him, the anime adaptation expands his role, providing more humanizing context and a clearer emotional anchor for his vengeance. He is not merely a brute; he is a man whose entire existence has been shaped by a desire for revenge against the killers of his father, making him one of the most formidable and driven warriors in the deadly conflict.
