Description
Hawatari Yuiko is a classmate of Ritsuka Aoyagi and is notable for her physical maturity, standing 167 centimeters tall, which is significantly taller than Ritsuka and most of her other peers. This height, combined with her mature and endowed figure, often leads to her being mistaken for being older than her actual age. Despite this more developed exterior, her personality is initially presented as ditzy and bubbly, though this belies a sharper, goodhearted nature.
On Ritsuka's first day at school, Yuiko is immediately overcome with fascination and awe toward him. Prodded by her mean-spirited classmates, she makes an effort to befriend him, an advance he is initially reluctant to accept, finding her somewhat weird or unintelligent. However, as Ritsuka overcomes these initial impressions, he comes to realize she possesses a degree of intelligence, and a friendship develops between them. This growing closeness becomes a source of irritation for a fellow classmate named Yayoi, who holds romantic feelings for Yuiko and was recently rejected by her on the basis that she would only date boys taller than herself.
Yuiko's care for Ritsuka is consistent and devoted, though it is distinctly one-sided. Ritsuka is clear that he views their relationship as platonic, a stance that persists to Yuiko's dismay. Despite this, she openly confesses her love and devotion for him on more than one occasion, and her actions consistently demonstrate her affection, such as bringing homemade strawberry jam for him to school. Ritsuka does show that he cares for her in return, standing up for her when she is bullied by the very classmates who had encouraged her to befriend him; after they smash her jam, Ritsuka defends her, stating those classmates were less than human and were using her. Nevertheless, Yuiko is also shown experiencing the limits of this bond. In a notable scene, she is abruptly left behind by Ritsuka when he rushes to the aid of his battle partner, Soubi, leading her to sadly reflect on her efforts to become good friends without seeing the results she had hoped for.
Despite these difficulties with Ritsuka, Yuiko develops an unusual yet harmonious friendship with Soubi. Although their personalities might seem likely to clash, they instead strike up a relationship founded on a unique understanding of each other. It is suggested that this connection stems from a shared experience of being in a one-sided or unrequited relationship with Ritsuka. Yuiko also has a specific fear of heights, as demonstrated during a ride on a ferris wheel. Her role in the story is primarily that of a close friend to the protagonist, and her presence brings a sense of warmth and genuine care into a narrative often defined by more complex and painful themes. The creator of the series has noted that Yuiko was conceived when thinking about what kind of girl would be required for Ritsuka to be happy, and that she changes from meeting him, with an intentional injection of intelligence added to her character.
