Description
Fly is the name given to the protagonist Dai in several Western localizations of the manga and anime series Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken. He is a young boy who serves as the central character of the story.
Fly's background begins on the isolated island of Delmurin, a sanctuary for monsters who have been freed from the influence of evil. As a baby, he was found and adopted by Brass, a kind monster magician who became his surrogate grandfather. Fly was raised among these peaceful monsters, with his closest companion being a golden, winged slime named Gome. Despite his upbringing, Fly is not a monster but a human with an extraordinary lineage. Later in the story, it is revealed that his real parents are Baran, a powerful Dragon Knight, and Princess Soara of the Kingdom of Alkyde.
In terms of personality, Fly is characterized by his strong sense of justice, boundless energy, and friendly, if somewhat naive, nature. He dreams of one day becoming a great hero, a stark contrast to his grandfather's wish for him to become a skilled magician—a path in which he shows little talent or motivation. Despite his laid-back attitude, he cares deeply for his friends and is heartbroken when the monsters of his island revert to their evil ways under a dark influence. This fierce protective instinct is what often awakens his hidden power.
Fly's role in the story begins when the evil forces of the Dark Lord Hadlar are resurrected. The legendary hero Avan arrives on Delmurin to train Fly and another student, Pop, to become new heroes. When Hadlar attacks and Avan sacrifices himself to save his students, Fly's hidden power manifests, and he sets off on a journey to avenge his master and defeat the forces of evil. Throughout the series, he faces a succession of powerful foes, including Hadlar and the Great Demon Lord Vearn, growing into the heroic role he always dreamed of.
Over the course of his journey, Fly forms several key relationships. He develops a strong rivalry with the dragon knight Baran, who is later revealed to be his father. He also befriends Pop, who starts as a cowardly magic-user but becomes his most loyal companion. Other important allies include the warrior Maam, the cursed prince Hyunckel, the beast general Crocodine, and Princess Leona of Papunika, who gifts him her dagger. Fly serves as the emotional anchor for this group, inspiring them with his unwavering determination.
Fly undergoes significant development as a character. He begins as a simple, headstrong boy with a mysterious power he cannot control, indicated by a dragon emblem that appears on his forehead in moments of extreme emotion. As the story progresses, he learns to master this power, which is revealed to be the might of a Dragon Knight. He also inherits his mentor Avan's signature technique, the Avan Slash, a powerful sword strike composed of Earth, Sea, and Air cuts. A pivotal moment in his development is the loss of his father, Baran, which causes him a deep period of doubt and mourning. With the support of his friends, he overcomes this grief and fully accepts the legacy of the Dragon Knight, ultimately using the ultimate technique, Doraura, to battle the dark god Vearn.
Fly's notable abilities are extensive. As a Dragon Knight, he possesses immense strength, speed, and magical power, a force that manifests as the Dragon Emblem on his face and later his hand. While initially inept at magic, he eventually learns several offensive spells, including the fire spells Mera and Merami, as well as lightning spells like Raiden. However, he is most famous for his swordsmanship. He masters the Avan Slash and its variations, including the elemental Earth, Sea, and Air Slashes. He also develops his own ultimate moves, such as the Giga Avan Slash, which combines his sword technique with his most powerful lightning spell. At the peak of his power, he can achieve a transformed state as a true hybrid Dragon Knight.
