Jackie Berger

Description
Jackie Berger was a Belgian actress renowned for her extensive career as a voice artist in French dubs, particularly celebrated for voicing young boys and pre-teen characters in numerous anime series from the 1970s through the 1990s. Born in Ixelles, Brussels on August 22, 1948, she initially pursued theatrical training and performed on stage for two years before dedicating herself fully to voice acting at the age of twenty-four.

Berger became one of the most emblematic voices in French animation, specializing in a distinct niche: bringing little boys to life with her natural child-like voice. Her extensive anime filmography from this period is vast, confirming her status as a ubiquitous presence for a generation of French viewers. The roles provided serve as a testament to her prolific career and include Mattia in Nobody's Boy Remi, Alex in New Jungle Emperor, Go Ahead Leo!, Jonas in Konpora Kid, and Edward in Lady Lady!!. She also voiced Arty in Gu-Gu Ganmo, Mathieu in Étoile de la Seine, Kum Kum in Wanpaku Omukashi Kumu Kumu, Jimmy in Pollyanna, and Jill in Acrobunch - The Quest for Treasure. Further demonstrating her range and ubiquity, she took on roles such as Gaudi in Hatarakids My Ham Gumi, Jinpei in the Gatchaman movie, the title character in Jack and the Beanstalk, and Chibi in Demon City Shinjuku. Her work in sports and adventure anime includes voicing Eric and Lucas in Moero! Top Striker, Marc and Toby in Lucy-May of the Southern Rainbow, Jack in Swiss Family Robinson, and Huckleberry Finn in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. She also voiced Rody in Adventures of Little El Cid, the iconic Esteban in the first season of The Mysterious Cities of Gold, and Jeanne Hazuki in Attacker You!.

Beyond anime, her voice was instantly recognizable in French dubs of countless live-action films and television series. She dubbed Danny Torrance in The Shining, Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the young Dalai Lama in Seven Years in Tibet, and Sam in Love Actually. Her television work included being the French voice of Arnold Jackson in Diff'rent Strokes and Nicholas Bradford in Eight Is Enough.

Berger's career was marked by recurring collaborations and a unique challenge presented by her typecasting. She often worked with the same Parisian dubbing studios, such as SOFI, and alongside a stable of other prolific voice actors. An anecdote highlighting her dominance in the field occurred during a crossover episode between the series Ricky ou la belle vie and Arnold et Willy. To prevent her from having to voice both title characters in a conversation with herself, the role of Arnold was temporarily given to another actress.

In her later career, Berger continued to voice prominent anime characters, demonstrating her enduring talent. Notably, she was the French voice of Gon Freecss in the 2011 adaptation of Hunter x Hunter and took on roles in popular modern series like Fairy Tail and Beelzebub. Her legacy also includes reprising her role as Jinpei from the original Gatchaman film for a special DVD release decades later, showcasing the lasting impact of her original performances.

Jackie Berger passed away on October 15, 2025, at the age of 77. Her voice, recognizable across generations, remains indelibly linked to the childhood memories of countless viewers who grew up with the heroes she portrayed. Her daughter, Justine Berger, has followed in her footsteps as an actress and voice artist.
