Description
Kaolla Sû is a young girl who resides as a tenant in room 301 of the Hinata Inn. She is a foreign exchange student attending a local middle school and holds the secret title of princess of the fictional South Pacific island nation of Molmol. Kaolla is thirteen years old at the beginning of the story, with a birthday on January 11th.
Kaolla’s personality is defined by an almost boundless, hyperactive energy. She is incredibly lively and cheerful, often seen as being in constant motion, whether she is cannonballing into the inn's hot springs or enthusiastically greeting other residents. Her curiosity about the world is primal and direct; due to her still-developing command of the Japanese language, she frequently asks if new objects or creatures are edible. This ties into her voracious appetite, as she has a well-known love for bananas and takoyaki, and has made numerous, albeit failed, attempts to cook and eat Tama-chan, the inn's pet turtle.
Despite her childish demeanor, Kaolla is a genuine prodigy and a mechanical genius. Her room in the inn is a chaotic jungle-like space that also serves as a high-tech laboratory, filled with various inventions she has created. Among her most notable creations are the Mecha Tama-chan series, a line of giant turtle-shaped robots designed with various functions ranging from capture to transportation and combat. She has also invented a wide array of other devices, including tracking radars and even a kissing machine. Her abilities extend beyond mechanics; she is also skilled at climbing trees, sleeping anywhere, and playing the saxophone.
Her role in the story is primarily that of a wildcard and a source of comedic chaos. Her inventions and unpredictable actions frequently disrupt the daily life of the Hinata Inn, often at the expense of the male protagonist, Keitaro Urashima. However, beneath her manic exterior lies a deeper emotional core. Kaolla ran away from her homeland of Molmol to avoid the royal responsibilities and an arranged marriage to her brother. In this context, the Hinata Inn represents a chosen family and a place of freedom she is desperate to preserve. Her stated ambitions include one day moving the entire inn to Molmol so her new life and old life can coexist, and her secondary goal of world domination is often played for laughs.
Her key relationships are varied. She shares a deep bond with Motoko Aoyama, who is one of the few residents with the stamina to keep up with her. Kaolla has even stated she would take Motoko as a lover or bodyguard, and their friendship is one of her most significant connections. Her affection for Keitaro is genuine, though frequently expressed through violent kicks or using him as a test subject. It is later revealed that Keitaro strongly resembles her older brother, and her feelings for him are largely rooted in this familial nostalgia. She also becomes partners in mischief with the young Sarah MacDougal, and the older resident Mitsune Konno was instrumental in teaching her Japanese.
While Kaolla does not undergo a dramatic personality shift, some development occurs as the series progresses. A recurring and unique trait is her transformation under a red moon, where she physically matures into an adult version of herself. In this form, she becomes more serious and has directly expressed romantic feelings for Keitaro, creating a distinct contrast with her usual childlike interactions. In the epilogue of the story, set several years later, it is shown that Kaolla has enrolled in and is attending Tokyo University, the prestigious school that is a central focus of the series, where she is a law student while still pursuing her inventive hobbies.
