Description
Princess Leona is the first princess of the Kingdom of Papnica, a land famous for its mages, and she serves as the main heroine of the story as well as one of the Disciples of Avan. She is fourteen years old during the main events and is training to become a sage, which is why she is sometimes described as a sage in training. She first travels to Dermline Island to undergo an important ritual to become a full-fledged sage, and it is there that she meets Dai. Their first encounter is not friendly; she bluntly calls him small and unimpressive, and he finds her sharp-tongued, but her belief that it is better to say what one thinks openly helps them grow closer. For Dai, who was raised among monsters, she becomes his first human friend, and their bond deepens when she gives him the Sun Knife, one of three ceremonial knives passed down in the Papnican royal family, to encourage him to stop doubting himself. When a plot by the bishop Temjin and the sage Baron leaves her poisoned by a deadly scorpion, Dai's desperate wish to save her awakens his power as a Dragon Knight, and this event seals her trust and affection for him.

In personality, Leona is lively, outspoken, and energetic, with little patience for pretense in private settings. Although her status can make her seem condescending or willful, she is not spoiled, and she shows wisdom and maturity far beyond her age. She possesses a firm sense of justice, and the strength of her soul is said to make the Mark of Avan shine white. In public she behaves with royal dignity and uses formal speech, while among close companions she shows a relaxed, youthful side and asks to be called simply Leona rather than Princess. She is known in other nations as a brave and daring princess, and even enemies such as Friezaard consider her a priority target because of her influence.

Her motivations center on protecting her kingdom and her people and, later, on doing everything she can to bring about peace in the world. When the forces of the Demon King attack, Papnica is devastated by the Undead Legion led by Hyunckel, her father the king disappears and is later confirmed dead, and Leona becomes the de facto leader of the surviving kingdom at only fourteen. She hides with her retainers in the tower on Balji Island, enduring fear and hunger while trusting that Dai will come to save her, and he does rescue her during an attack by Friezaard. She then takes charge of rebuilding Papnica. When Hyunckel, the man who destroyed her homeland, is brought before her, she sets aside personal vengeance and, weighing the feelings of her people, the wishes of her friends, and the demands of her position, forgives him and orders him to atone by dedicating his life as a true Disciple of Avan. This decision impresses even the veteran mage Matrif and demonstrates her broad vision, intelligence, and capacity for mercy.

Her role in the story evolves over time. She supports the group with healing magic when Maam leaves to train as a martial artist, and after reading the Sky Chapter of Avan's book, she decides to contribute in her own way by organizing a summit of the world's kings to build cooperation among humans against the Demon King's forces. She greatly admires Queen Flora of Carl, and during the final confrontation Flora designates her as the fifth Disciple of Avan, making her an official member of the group and the fastest person to receive the Mark of Avan, in less than a day. Together with Flora, Maam, and Merle, she undertakes the trials of the Cave of Breaking Evil and masters the great banishing spell Minakatoru, which she uses to disable the functions of the enemy's floating palace and allow her companions to board it. Avan also entrusts her with the Gold Feather and Silver Feather and acknowledges her role as the guide who leads the party.

Her relationship with Dai is one of the emotional cores of the story. They never confess their feelings openly, but she is his most important source of encouragement. She rallies him when he is paralyzed by fear of defeat, coordinates healing strategy with him during battle, and wounds the great demon king Vearn with a knife, the first injury he suffers, which strengthens Dai's resolve. Because of this act she is the first of the party to be turned into an eye by Vearn, though her wish reaches the creature Gome and helps trigger the power of the God's Tears that turns all the eyes against him. Her other relationships are also meaningful: she teases Popp about his feelings for Maam, speaks frankly to Maam about the need for offensive strength, and earns the respect of older warriors such as Hyunckel and Crocodine. After the final battle, when Dai disappears to protect the world, she believes he will one day return and waits for him.

In terms of abilities, Leona is a sage, a versatile class that combines healing and offensive magic. She is skilled in both fire-type and ice-type spells, such as Merami and Hyado, and later learns Hyadalko and Bagi, but her greatest strength is healing, particularly the powerful spell Behoma, which she uses to great effect in difficult battles such as the fight against Baran. She also knows support and utility spells including Hoimi, Behoimi, Kiary, Kiariku, Zameha, Toramana, Rariho, Inpas, and Zaoraru, and she masters Minakatoru, the great banishing spell. Her direct combat ability is limited compared to dedicated fighters, but her wisdom, leadership, and healing magic are vital to the survival of the group. She also carries the ceremonial knives of the Papnican royal family, passing the Sun Knife to Dai, with the Wind Knife later reaching him through her retainer Badak.
