Description
Mr Tom Chrisford is a supporting character in the anime A Little Princess Sara. He is introduced as a former classmate of Captain Ralph Crewe at Eton School and later becomes his business partner in a diamond mine. After Captain Crewe’s death from illness, Chrisford is consumed by guilt and travels to London with the dual purpose of recovering from his own illness, which he contracted in India, and searching for Crewe’s daughter, Sara. He is a wealthy but physically weakened man, using a wheelchair at home and a cane when he goes out; though he appears older, his actual age is in his thirties. He remains unmarried.
Chrisford is kind and generous, driven by a deep sense of remorse over his friend’s death. Unaware of Sara’s identity, he becomes her secret benefactor from the house next to Miss Minchin’s seminary. Through his Indian servant Ram Dass, he arranges for warm meals, gifts, and books to be mysteriously delivered to Sara’s attic room, calling himself The Magician. His actions are motivated not only by guilt but also by genuine sympathy for the impoverished girl he observes.
His role in the story is that of the benevolent figure who ultimately resolves Sara’s suffering. He is the key to restoring her fortune and legacy. When Sara accidentally returns his escaped pet monkey, the two meet, and Chrisford realizes she is the daughter of his late partner. He immediately transfers his property and wealth to her, legally adopts her, and retrieves her sold belongings, including her doll Emily and other cherished items. He also ensures that Sara’s close friend Becky becomes her personal maid.
Chrisford’s key relationships are with Sara, whom he comes to love as a daughter, and with Ram Dass, who acts as his eyes and hands in secretly aiding her. He also shares a past connection with Captain Crewe, which defines his present guilt and mission. His development is marked by the transition from a guilt-ridden invalid to a relieved and contented guardian after finding Sara and clearing his conscience. Notable abilities include his substantial wealth, his careful planning in executing the plot of The Magician, and his persistence in searching for Sara despite his physical limitations.
