Description
Duke Poivre, whose true name is Poivre Meilleure, is a character from the magical world who serves as the familiar to the young witch Chocolat Meilleure. His outward form is that of a frog with red and black horizontal stripes and deep green eyes, a shape he was not born into but rather transformed into out of necessity. In his original human form, he is a wizard with shaggy red hair featuring a distinct black streak and red eyes. His assumed name, Duke, is the identity he maintains while living as a frog, and his real family name, Meilleure, is the same as his summoner's.

Duke is characterized by a laid-back, lazy, and somewhat flippant personality. As a familiar, he often lounges around on Chocolat's bed and offers unhelpful or discouraging comments rather than practical advice for collecting hearts. A notable verbal tic is his habit of ending his sentences with the Japanese onomatopoeia for a frog's croak, "kero". Despite this lackadaisical exterior, he is deeply attached to his sister, and his seemingly indifferent demeanor conceals a powerful and capable wizard capable of great bravery and sacrifice when the situation demands it.

His true identity is that of Poivre Meilleure, the younger brother of Cinnamon Meilleure, which makes him the biological uncle of his master, Chocolat. He was a wandering wizard who felt he lived in the shadow of his talented older sister and was considered the wayward son of his father, Corne Meilleure. His primary motivation became protecting his sister and niece. When Cinnamon was declared a traitor and became a fugitive for having a child with Glace, the Lord of Darkness, Poivre aided her in hiding. To escape prosecution for helping his sister, he cast a spell to disguise himself as a familiar. However, the spell backfired, and he was permanently transformed into a real magical familiar rather than a disguised one. Through a twist of fate, he ended up being summoned as the familiar for his niece, Chocolat, who had been chosen as a Queen Candidate, allowing him to watch over her secretly.

In his role in the story, he acts as Chocolat's protector and guide, though he does so from the unassuming position of a seemingly useless frog. His true capabilities surface during moments of crisis, revealing his immense power. For instance, he is powerful enough to effortlessly tear through the barrier of the antagonist Pierre and knows Pierre's real name, a fact that hints at his deep knowledge of the magical world's secrets. He can also perform high-level magic for a familiar, such as creating a door to the Magical World, a feat that is extremely difficult even for a normal witch. In his human form, his abilities are even more apparent, as he can teleport a group of people across vast distances in an instant, manipulate water, and conjure powerful shields capable of protecting an entire party from harm.

His key relationships center on his family. With Chocolat, his relationship is complex; he is both her familiar servant and her uncle, and he never resented his sister for being the more successful child. He maintains a fierce yet occasionally flirtatious rivalry with Blanca, the white mouse familiar of Chocolat's rival, Vanilla. The two former wizards constantly fight, reflecting the competitive nature of their masters' relationship. He also shares a close bond with Queen Candy, who was his sister Cinnamon's best friend, and he appears to be on very affectionate terms with her.

The character's development occurs primarily through the revelation of his secret past. As the story progresses and Chocolat grows stronger, the truth of Duke's lineage and his past as the wizard Poivre comes to light. He is eventually freed from his permanent frog form and regains his human body, at which point he attends the coronation ceremony of the new Queen alongside his father. His journey is one of moving from a wandering, self-proclaimed worthless son to a dedicated protector and, finally, to a respected member of magical society in his own right.
