Description
Caren is the mermaid princess of the Antarctic Ocean and the keeper of the purple pearl. She is introduced as the younger twin sister of Noel, the mermaid princess of the Arctic Ocean, born on the opposite side of the Earth. Because they live in such distant parts of the ocean, the two sisters have never met, yet Caren still harbors a deep and immediate care for Noel.

In terms of personality, Caren initially presents as a mysterious, calm, and mature figure. However, she can also be cold, distant, and even perceived as rude, especially when she first encounters the main trio of mermaids. This coldness is largely driven by her primary motivation for much of the first story arc: the rescue of her captured sister, Noel. Caren harbors a strong grudge against the mermaid Rina after being misinformed that Rina abandoned Noel during an attack by the villain Gaito. Believing that Rina betrayed her sister, Caren treats her with hostility and refuses to join forces with the other mermaid princesses, preferring to search for Noel alone.

Caren's key relationships are central to her character development. Her bond with Noel is paramount, and her desire to rescue her sister fuels her early actions. Her relationship with Rina is initially defined by this misunderstanding, which serves as a major source of conflict. It is only after witnessing Rina's dedication and bravery that Caren forgives her and acknowledges she was wrong. Later, in the second season, Caren develops a love interest in a British researcher named Subaru, who shares her deep care for the Antarctic region. This romance marks a shift in her character, as she begins to understand the romantic feelings of the other mermaids that she had previously dismissed.

Throughout the story, Caren undergoes significant development. Her hostile, independent nature softens after her sister is rescued and Gaito is defeated. In the second season, she becomes noticeably kinder, more open to having fun with the other princesses, and more caring overall. She even shows a playful side, sometimes teasing Rina about their past animosity. While she remains slightly arrogant, her evolution from a solitary, grudge-holding mermaid to a loyal and caring friend is a key part of her arc.

Caren possesses the standard abilities of a mermaid princess. She can transform into her idol form, known as the Purple Pearl Voice, by calling upon her pearl. In this form, she uses the power of her singing to purify and defeat enemies. Her solo image song is "Aurora no Kaze ni Notte" (Riding on the Winds of the Aurora). In the manga, she can transform at will with no incantation and uses an attack called Cutie Hot Pitch, while in the anime she participates in the group attack Love Shower Pitch. Her appearance changes between her human, mermaid, and idol forms; in her human form, her hair is a dark purple and her eyes are brown, while in her mermaid and idol forms, her hair becomes a lighter, curlier shade of purple and her eyes turn purple as well.
