Description
Mako Nakarai, who goes by the nickname Nakama, is one of the fifteen middle-school students who become pilots of the giant robot Zearth. She is a short girl with black hair and a warm but quiet demeanor. Nakama has devoted herself to living as honestly and responsibly as possible, hoping that others will see her as a dependable person. Despite her efforts, she remains isolated and friendless because the other students know that her mother works as a high-class call girl. This knowledge has led to relentless bullying since elementary school. Nakama is deeply troubled by any form of hatred or dishonesty; she cannot bring herself to fight back against her tormentors and instead endures their treatment in silence. At the same time, she admires her mother greatly and wishes to one day stand as proudly as her mother does.

Her mother, aware of Nakama’s loneliness, encourages her to attend a nature school in the hope that she will make friends there. After the first battle against an enemy robot, Nakama secretly begins sewing uniforms for herself and the other pilots, using money she earns from needlework. When she learns that she will be the fifth pilot, she realizes she does not have enough time or money to finish the uniforms. Desperate, she attempts to follow the same path as her mother and asks her mother’s pimp to arrange a client for her. The man who arrives turns out to be an old acquaintance of her mother; he simply buys her dinner and drives her home. Her mother, having discovered the plan, gives Nakama the needlework savings she had been putting aside to prevent Nakama from having to sell herself.

During her battle, Nakama’s opponent gives the population time to evacuate, which allows her to finish the uniforms. Before returning to the cockpit, she learns that one of the girls who bullied her is missing. Nakama uses the powers of Zearth to locate the girl and teleport her out of danger, finally standing up to her bully in the process. She defeats the enemy robot with relative ease, and as she dies, she expresses a wish that if she is reincarnated, she will come back as a person just like her mother. After her death, the girls who tormented her begin helping clean the classroom, indicating a change in their behavior.

Nakama’s role in the story is as the pilot who, despite her own suffering, acts selflessly to protect others and completes a meaningful act of kindness before her life ends. Her key relationship is with her mother, who is her model of strength and pride, and indirectly with the other pilots, for whom she makes uniforms. Her development centers on overcoming her passivity and fear of conflict, culminating in her decision to rescue a bully and her acceptance of her own fate with quiet dignity. Her most notable ability, apart from her sewing skill, is her use of Zearth’s power to locate and teleport a person to safety.
