Description
Kokopelli is a central and enigmatic figure in Bokurano whose actions directly set the primary conflict in motion. He initially presents himself as a friendly programmer working on a new video game, a guise he uses to lure fifteen children from a summer camp into a cave filled with complex electronic equipment. There, he convinces them to enter into a contract to test the game, which they believe involves piloting a giant robot. After they sign, Kokopelli pilots the robot Zearth in its first battle to give them a demonstration, instructing them on its controls before vanishing and leaving them to face the horrifying truth that each victory costs the pilot their life.
His true background is gradually revealed to be deeply tragic. His real name is Garaku, also known as Usui, and he was a school teacher from a parallel Earth. On his world, his own students entered the same contract. Driven by guilt and a desperate desire to save them, he attempted to strike a deal with the mysterious guide Koyemshi, offering himself in their place. He was only permitted to save one person and, in a decision that would haunt him forever, he did not choose his own daughter. He was forced to watch her pilot Zearth, win her battle, and die. To ensure the cycle continued and fulfilled his part of the bargain, Kokopelli became the last pilot of his world and was tasked with recruiting pilots for the next Earth, which became the main story's setting.
His personality is a complex mix of surface-level calm and deep-seated sorrow. He is highly persuasive and manipulative, necessary traits for tricking the children into the contract. Yet this manipulative exterior strains against his profound guilt, which surfaces in a quiet, remorseful apology whispered as he departs from the children. His primary motivation is fulfilling the terms of his grim deal with Koyemshi, forcing him to pass on the terrible burden of the contract. He has accepted the cynical and macabre rules of the conflict, acting not out of malice but out of a resigned duty to a system he could not change.
Kokopelli's role in the story is that of the catalyst and the tragic predecessor. He sets the plot in motion and his backstory serves as a grim omen and a parallel to the fate awaiting the main cast. His key relationship is with the fifteen children, whom he deceives and sacrifices, and with Koyemshi, the supernatural guide with whom he bargained for his role. The unresolved trauma of his relationship with his own students and his daughter forms the core of his character.
He demonstrates notable ability as a capable pilot of Zearth, but his most significant power is his role as a contractor, possessing the knowledge and authority to initiate the terrible cycle of battles. His primary character development occurs before the events of the main story on his home world, where his failed attempt to save his students transforms him from an ordinary teacher into a resigned but guilt-ridden figure. By the time he appears to the children, his personality is fully formed, and he serves as a somber warning of the psychological toll the battles take.
