TV-Series
Description
Hikari Kuroda is a student in class one three at Sakakino Academy, recognizable by her distinctive hairstyle featuring ring-shaped buns that resemble squid rings. She is fifteen years old, born on November 9, with B-type blood and a height of 161.4 centimeters. Her family runs a confectionery store and café known for its lemon custard cake, and she works part-time at a second shop called Sweets Ohara. Hikari is a childhood acquaintance of Taisuke Sawanaga and Yuuki Ashikaga, having attended the same middle school in Aoi Town before moving to Haramihama for high school.
Around her friends, Hikari is friendly, social, and open with her emotions, often serving as the straight man or tsukkomi among the group with her expressive voice and facial reactions. She is close with Sekai Saionji, Setsuna Kiyoura, and Nanami Kanroji, and her loyalty typically aligns with Sekai in the story's central romantic conflicts. Despite her generally cheerful demeanor, she is described as the most childish of the cast, with a tendency toward whining, prying into the affairs of others, and being somewhat high-maintenance or fastidious. She holds a predominantly negative opinion of boys, particularly Makoto Ito, at least in the beginning, and does not hesitate to voice her disapproval. Interestingly, unlike some of her classmates, she does not go out of her way to harass Kotonoha Katsura, possibly because she shares the same train to school and recognizes that Kotonoha's personality does not match the rumors surrounding her.
Hikari harbors a long-standing but largely unreciprocated crush on Taisuke Sawanaga, dating back to their middle school years. This romantic interest is a primary motivation for many of her actions, as she repeatedly seeks opportunities to get closer to him, such as acquiring pool tickets to invite him along with friends. However, her shyness in expressing her feelings directly often prevents meaningful progress. As a close friend to Sekai, she actively roots for Makoto and Sekai to be together when the story follows that romantic route, and she feels betrayed when she discovers Makoto has been unfaithful, such as his affair with Otome Kataoka during the school festival. Her concern for Sekai leads her to confront Makoto and urge him to take responsibility, yet in a notable turn of events during both the visual novel and the anime adaptation, this very confrontation leads to Hikari herself beginning a sexual relationship with Makoto.
In the visual novel, Hikari is a supporting character who can follow significantly different paths depending on player choices. If Makoto is pursuing Sekai, Hikari remains a supportive understanding friend who helps keep him informed about Sekai's whereabouts. However, if Makoto pursues Kotonoha, Hikari's opinion of him drops severely, and she reports his movements to Sekai while refusing to support his relationship even in happier endings. In the game, she also has her own dedicated route that begins after the main love triangle is resolved, where Makoto attempts to set her up with Taisuke but ends up sleeping with her himself. This route is characterized as decadent, with Hikari comparing Taisuke unfavorably to Makoto and ultimately becoming entangled with him in ways that range from accidentally provoking Sekai by becoming pregnant with Makoto's child to leading a promiscuous lifestyle where she views Makoto as useful only for sex and shares him with other women.
The anime adaptation condenses her role to that of Sekai's occasional sidekick who pines for Taisuke but never gets closer than friendship. After the school festival, she worries about Sekai refusing to attend school and goes to convince Makoto to bring her back, which results in her having sex with Makoto despite her stated intentions. She demonstrates some guilt afterward, visiting Sekai to try to convince her, urging Makoto to have an honest conversation with Sekai, and calling Sekai to check on her during Christmas dinner preparations.
One notable ability or unique distinction attributed to Hikari across multiple sources is that she is the only heroine in School Days with a specific ending where she bears Makoto's child. Her character arc, particularly in the game, can shift dramatically from a loyal and concerned friend to someone who has her own complex and often morally ambiguous romantic and sexual entanglements, making her one of the more variable figures in the narrative.
