Description
Hinagiku Katsura is a central figure in her narrative, recognized as the student council president of the prestigious Hakuou Academy, where she also serves as the captain of the kendo club. She is an unofficial idol on campus, admired by both her male and female peers for her remarkable abilities and cool demeanor. At the start of the story, she is fifteen years old but later turns sixteen, with a birthday on March 3rd.

Hinagiku's personal history shares a profound similarity with the protagonist, Hayate Ayasaki. In her past, she and her older sister, Yukiji, were abandoned by their biological parents, leaving them with a significant debt of eighty million yen. Yukiji managed to settle this debt, and the two sisters were later adopted by a former elementary school teacher of Yukiji's and his wife, taking the Katsura name. This background of hardship and resilience is a key part of her character, allowing her to instinctively understand the pain Hayate carries.

In terms of personality, Hinagiku is consistently portrayed as highly capable, competent, and kind. However, she is not without her flaws. Her most notable weakness is a severe fear of heights, a condition known as acrophobia, which can leave her frozen in terror when she finds herself in high places. This fear is often a source of comedic moments but also presents a vulnerability that contrasts with her otherwise strong image. Other characters sometimes describe her as having a masculine side, attributing this to her athleticism, leadership qualities, and the "cool" aura she projects, which can surpass that of her male counterparts. Despite her many talents, she can also be stubborn and prideful, using these traits to mask her insecurities.

Hinagiku's role in the story is multifaceted. As the student council president, she holds a position of authority and responsibility within the school. Her first meeting with Hayate occurs when he discovers her stuck in a tree while trying to help a baby bird; unable to get down due to her acrophobia, he comes to her rescue. In gratitude for his assistance, she invites him to a special area atop the school's clock tower, which is typically reserved for student council elites, and grants him permission to call her by her first name. This encounter marks the beginning of a significant relationship, as she develops romantic feelings for Hayate, finding herself infatuated with his attractive and selfless personality. Throughout the series, her internal struggle with these emotions forms a major part of her character development, especially her hesitation and pride that prevents her from easily expressing her true feelings.

Her key relationships include her older sister Yukiji, a teacher who is something of a freeloader, often requiring Hinagiku to take care of her. She shares a friendship with Ayumu Nishizawa and interacts frequently with Nagi Sanzenin, the main female lead, and Maria, the Sanzenin household's maid, often acting as the straight man to the series' absurd humor.

Hinagiku undergoes significant development throughout the story. Her emotional journey is heavily tied to her growing feelings for Hayate, with the manga providing deeper insight into her internal monologue and the gradual, natural evolution of her emotions. A pivotal moment in her development is the birthday arc, where her feelings shift from denial to a more honest and complicated emotional state. She also works to overcome her acrophobia, eventually conquering this fear after a battle with a character named Aoi Himegami.

Regarding her abilities, Hinagiku is a genius-level intellect, consistently ranking as the top student at Hakuou Academy, a school filled with prodigies. She is a masterful fighter, highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat and specifically an expert in kendo, the art of swordsmanship. She is often seen carrying a shinai, a bamboo practice sword. Her physical prowess is considered equal to that of Hayate, granting her superhuman physical characteristics, speed, and stamina. In battle, she wields powerful weapons, including Masamune, an enchanted wooden sword effective against spirits and demons, and later Shirosakura, a legendary sword that accepts her as its rightful owner and also grants her the ability to fly. She is admired for her capability in virtually everything she undertakes, from academics and martial arts to leadership and vocational skills.
