Description
Helen is a Claymore warrior who holds the rank of number 22 in the same generation as Clare. She is defined by a personality that starkly contrasts with the typically stoic and emotionless demeanor of other warriors. Helen is brash, loud, hot-tempered, and often appears aggressive or even bullying at first glance. She has a rebellious streak and a tendency to act impulsively, which frequently causes friction with others. Deneve, her closest companion, often refers to her as a troublemaker. Despite her rough exterior, Helen is one of the most optimistic and cheerful Claymores, possessing a wider emotional range than most and looking for the bright side of life even in grim situations. She is fiercely loyal to those she considers friends and is capable of offering sound advice, once reminding Deneve that Claymores are only human. She also has an unusual appreciation for food and drink, often seen eating an apple and being the only warrior shown to eat and drink for pleasure.
Very little of Helen's past is known. At some point during her service to the Organization, she lost control in a fight and nearly awakened into a monster. Unlike many others, especially the male warriors who often succumbed to the pleasurable sensation of awakening, she managed to pull herself back from the brink. This event caused her to become partially awakened, a state that permanently altered her abilities and granted her the power to stretch her limbs to extraordinary lengths.
Her motivations evolve over the course of the story. Initially, she appears motivated by a simple desire to fight and prove herself, coupled with a disdain for lower-ranked warriors. Her first encounter with Clare is marked by open mockery of Clare's low rank. However, after witnessing Clare's fierce determination and fighting ability in a life-or-death battle against an awakened being, Helen's attitude changes completely. She develops a deep respect for Clare and forms a strong bond with her, Miria, and Deneve, based on their shared status as half-awakened warriors who were sent on a suicide mission by the Organization. This leads to her primary motivation: survival alongside her comrades and, eventually, defying and fighting back against the Organization that created and betrayed them.
In the story, Helen plays the role of a steadfast ally and a source of comic relief and emotional warmth among the main group. She is first introduced as a member of the hunting party sent to kill an awakened being in the mountains of Paburo. She later becomes one of the twenty-four warriors sent to the Northern Campaign in Pieta. In this brutal battle, she fights fiercely against the army of awakened beings and their leader, Rigardo. Believed to be dead along with the others after the campaign, Helen is actually one of the seven survivors who faked their deaths. For the next seven years, she hides in the northern mountains with Clare, Miria, Deneve, Cynthia, Tabitha, and Yuma, training to suppress her yoki and perfect her combat skills. After revealing their survival, she becomes a key member of the "Seven Ghosts," traveling with Deneve to the south and later reuniting with the others to confront the Organization and the most powerful awakened beings.
Helen's most significant relationship is with Deneve, who acts as her foil. Where Helen is impulsive and emotional, Deneve is calm and pragmatic. Their opposing traits complement each other perfectly, with Deneve often having to rein in Helen's reckless actions while Helen helps Deneve see a brighter perspective. She holds great respect for Miria, whom she calls "Miria-neesan" (big sister Miria) and follows her leadership faithfully. Her relationship with Clare transforms from one of scorn to deep friendship and mutual respect. She also forms a bond with the young warrior Dietrich, whom she and Deneve rescue, despite finding Dietrich's serious attitude exasperating.
Over the course of the narrative, Helen shows significant development. She matures from a reckless bully into a more dependable but still spirited warrior. Her time in hiding for seven years demonstrates her capacity for patience and discipline, which she lacked as a younger warrior. Her combat abilities grow immensely, most notably mastering the "Drill Sword," a technique originally used by Jean. Helen adapts this powerful skill for her own use; unlike Jean, who required close range and significant yoki release, Helen can execute the Drill Sword almost instantly and at any range. She perfects it to a devastating degree, capable of twisting her arm up to 55 times, far surpassing Jean's limit of 21 rotations, and using it to punch massive holes through extremely tough awakened beings.
Helen's notable abilities are centered around her unique physiology as a half-awakened warrior. Her primary power is the ability to stretch her arms to great lengths, allowing her to strike or bind targets from a distance. She wears special durable armor on her arms to facilitate this. Her signature technique is the Extendable Drill Sword, a combination of her stretching ability and the twisting drill attack she learned from Jean. She is also an offensive-type warrior, meaning her yoki is focused on attack rather than regeneration. As such, while she can reattach severed limbs, she cannot easily regrow them. After seven years of training in secret, she also developed the ability to completely suppress her yoki, making her undetectable to other warriors and awakened beings who rely on sensing it.
