Description
Ichise is a young man of nineteen who serves as the central figure of the narrative. He is of slim but well-built physique, with pale skin, blue eyes that often carry an empty and cold look, and medium-length black hair. His typical expression is largely unmoved and devoid of visible emotion. In his early appearances, he wears ordinary, indistinctive clothing and a long coat, later donning a black suit as he becomes more involved with the Organo, a ruling syndicate in the city of Lux.

Orphaned at an early age, Ichise witnessed the public hanging of his father, who he believed had betrayed his friends, and soon after lost his mother. The only possession he retains from this past is a small vial containing a sample of his mother's cells, an object to which he forms an almost existential attachment. Following these tragedies, he survives by becoming an underground prize fighter, engaging in brutal and bloody matches not for glory but as a sheer means of survival. His existence at this stage is one of profound vulnerability and a lack of freedom, treated as an inferior subject by his handlers.

While cleaning up after a fight, he is coerced into a passionless sexual encounter in exchange for his payment. During this act, he reacts to having his eye stabbed by the woman's nail, striking her and thus displeasing his promoter. As punishment, he is hunted down and, before a crowd, has his right arm severed by a sword-wielding enforcer, Kyosuke Ishii. In a berserk rage, Ichise charges at the woman who had orchestrated his mutilation, only to have his left leg cut off as well. Left to die, he is later found by Keigo Oonishi, the leader of the Organo, who offers him a chance to continue living.

He is subsequently taken in by a scientist known only as Doc, who replaces his missing limbs with advanced prosthetics through a process called texhnolyzation, using him as the subject of her greatest experiment. His new limbs are prototypes that incorporate the DNA of his deceased mother. Initially, Ichise struggles immensely with his new body, dragging the remnants of his dismembered flesh behind him as he crawls through the streets, refusing offers of help from strangers and appearing as little more than a wounded animal.

Personality-wise, Ichise is defined by his extreme silence and reserved demeanor, rarely speaking and often going entire episodes with only a line or two of dialogue. He is generally calm when unbothered but possesses a volatile and violent core. When angered or crossed, he channels nearly all his energy into destroying the source of his frustration, showing little hesitation or guilt in doing so, whether it be an enemy in a street fight or a man who merely blocks his path. His primary motivation is a raw, immovable determination to survive, a trait that both amuses and frustrates those around him who witness his refusal to die even when near-fatally wounded. He does not act out of idealism or a desire to be a hero; his limited attachments to others form out of loyalty, personal interest, or because he was asked, as he confesses he has nowhere else to go and does not know what to do with himself.

His key relationships become the primary catalysts for his subtle development. His connection with Keigo Oonishi is pivotal, as Oonishi is perhaps the first person who sees value in Ichise and offers him a place in the world, teaching him what loyalty means. In service to Oonishi and the Organo, Ichise finds a new, if violent, purpose. His relationship with Doc is deeply ambiguous, with her affection toward him potentially being mutual, one-sided, or something akin to a maternal or sibling bond, but the nature of her feelings is never explicitly clarified. The most profound change in him occurs through his meeting with Ran, a mysterious young seer who sells flowers in Lux. Ichise feels a deep fascination for her, and through her, he begins to acquire something of a heart, learning concern for another person and a desire to change his violent behavior, even wanting to take her to the surface where no one has to hurt themselves. This desire for change is tragically at odds with the prophetic future Ran sees for him, one of destruction and solitude.

Over the course of the story, Ichise's role evolves from a passive, hunted survivor to an active agent within the political conflicts of Lux, becoming a soldier for the Organo and taking on assignments that reveal the city's ugliness. He pursues and enacts a roaring rampage of revenge against the man who framed his father, a quest that demonstrates his strong, if quiet, attachment to the past. He also eliminates the enigmatic chaos-bringer Yoshii in a decisive act that saves Oonishi's life. His development is one of incremental opening; his rough edges dull slightly, he becomes more open to certain people like the Organo elder Hirohisa Gotoh, and he shows more expressed concern for others, even risking his life for them.

In combat, Ichise is notably formidable. His primary fighting style is simple, brutal boxing, relying on powerful jabs and one-hit knockouts. After receiving his texhnolyzed limbs, his strength and resilience are greatly enhanced, allowing him to effortlessly take out groups of armed hitmen and perform superhuman feats such as punching a man's head clean off. Despite this power, he is not undefeatable and often suffers severe injuries in his battles. He is characterized by his berserker rages, which grant him near-unstoppable force when activated but are not always under his control. In the end, his journey concludes not in triumph but in a quiet, fatalistic demise. After losing almost everyone he has ever cared about and witnessing the destruction of Lux, he succumbs to his injuries atop a rooftop. As the power of his texhnolyzed limbs fails, they project a simple, crude image of a flower onto the ground, and he accepts his death with a subtle, final smile, marking the end of his struggle and the end of the city itself.
