TV-Series
Description
Eutus is a mysterious, enigmatic figure who appears throughout the various parallel dimensions in the series. He is typically depicted as a man who appears to be in his thirties, dressed in long, wizard-like robes, and is notable for his distinctive blue hair. His demeanor is calm, mysterious, and wise, often carrying an air of someone who knows far more about the situation than the protagonists do. Despite his aged and knowing appearance, he has a particular dislike for being called Mister due to the implied range in age, and instead strongly prefers to be addressed as Bro.
The background of Eutus is deeply intertwined with the very origin of the Abenobashi shopping arcade. He was originally Abe no Seimei, a legendary onmyoji (a master of occultism and divination) from the Heian era in Japan. A thousand years prior to the main events of the story, Seimei was a close friend of a nobleman named Masayuki, who was married to a woman named Mune. While Masayuki was often away, he entrusted Seimei to guard and keep company with his wife. During this time, Seimei and Mune fell deeply in love and began an affair. When the jealous Masayuki discovered the betrayal, he killed Mune and then committed suicide. Overcome with guilt and grief, Seimei used a powerful and forbidden onmyo ritual in a desperate attempt to resurrect them. However, the spell did not bring them back to life in his own time. Instead, it shattered reality and transported Seimei one thousand years into the future, where he became the wandering magician known as Eutus.
His primary motivation throughout the series is tied to this original sin and his resulting displacement from time. He is essentially a man out of his own era, trapped in a strange future. In the present day of the story, Eutus wanders the surreal and chaotic alternate dimensions of Abenobashi that are created by the protagonist, Sasshi. He takes it upon himself to guide Sasshi, acting as a reluctant mentor. He understands the underlying mechanics of their reality shifts because he himself is a master of dimensional travel, moving between worlds with a conscious will that Sasshi initially lacks. Eutus aims to teach Sasshi the truth about their situation: that Sasshi is the one unconsciously creating these worlds to escape the pain of his grandfathers death and the impending loss of his childhood friend, Arumi. Eutus also seeks to resolve his own karmic loop, hoping to find a version of Mune and Masayuki who can exist without tragedy.
In the story, Eutus serves as the guide and mentor figure, contrasting sharply with Sasshis immature and reluctant heroism. He provides the crucial exposition, revealing the mechanics of the Abenobashi dimensions and the nature of Sasshis power. In several of the parody worlds, he takes on a role consistent with the genre, such as a dwarf in the sword and sorcery realm or a scientist in a sci-fi setting, but his core identity remains constant.
His key relationships are primarily with Sasshi and the various incarnations of Mune and Masayuki. With Sasshi, he shares a karmic connection, seeing in the boy a reflection of his own inability to let go of the past. He agrees to take Sasshi on as an apprentice onmyoji, teaching him the skills needed to control their shared power. His connection to the voluptuous, red-haired woman Mune-Mune, who appears in many worlds, is fraught with history; she is an echo or a reincarnation of the original Mune he loved and lost. His ultimate goal is to break the cycle of tragedy that links him to Masayuki and Mune.
Eutus undergoes a subtle but significant development. Initially, he appears as an aloof and mysterious wizard merely observing the kids chaos. However, as Sasshi grows and learns to accept reality, Eutus is finally able to resolve his own ancient grief. By the conclusion, he is reunited with a reincarnated Mune (a third version, not the same as the one from his flashbacks or Mune-Mune) without causing the death of Masayuki, allowing him to find peace and halt his endless wandering.
Regarding notable abilities, Eutus is a highly skilled onmyoji. Unlike Sasshi, who unconsciously warps reality, Eutus can travel between dimensions with full awareness and intent. He has a deep understanding of the magical forces that govern the Abenobashi Shopping Arcade and is capable of performing advanced rituals and spells, a remnant of his life as Abe no Seimei, one of the most famous occultists in Japanese folklore.
