Yukari Godai is the grandmother of Yusaku Godai, the main protagonist of Maison Ikkoku. She lives in the countryside with Yusaku's parents and helps run the Godai family restaurant, but she makes occasional trips to Tokyo to visit her favorite grandson. Yusaku, however, often dreads these visits because her presence tends to complicate his life. Yukari is a fun-loving and warm-hearted elderly woman who genuinely cares about her grandson's well-being, but she is also mischievous and enjoys meddling in his personal affairs, especially when it comes to his love life. Her primary motivation is to see Yusaku settled and happy, and she takes a proactive and often intrusive approach to achieving that goal. She is perceptive and quickly picks up on the romantic tension between Yusaku and Kyoko Otonashi, the manager of Maison Ikkoku, as well as the complication posed by Kozue Nanao, a girl who mistakenly believes she is dating Yusaku. On one of her visits, she creates an awkward situation by arranging for Yusaku and Kyoko to have dinner at the home of Shun Mitaka, Yusaku's wealthy and handsome rival for Kyoko's affections, after Mitaka mistakenly assumes she is Kyoko's grandmother. Through her direct questioning and interference, Yukari forces Yusaku to confront his feelings and makes it clear she approves of Kyoko, playing a key role in pushing the romantic plot forward. Her appearances are relatively brief but memorable, serving as a catalyst for character development and comedic situations. She has no supernatural or combat abilities, but she possesses a sharp intuition about people's emotions and a fearless willingness to speak her mind and create social pressure to achieve her goals.
