Description
Philippe Myers is a character in the anime Planetes. He is an American man, born on January 16, 2015, and he is 59 years old during the events of the story. He was created for the anime version of the story and has no counterpart in the original manga. He works for Technora Corporation, where he serves as the assistant section manager, effectively acting as the chief of the company's Debris Section. Because of this position, he is addressed as "chief" by those around him throughout the series.

Physically, Philippe is a portly, overweight man with short blonde hair. Despite his heavy build, he has a jolly and cheerful demeanor, and he is especially fond of snacks such as crisps and cakes. He has a distinctive habit of addressing his co-workers by shortened versions of their names, usually calling them by the first syllable of their name.

In terms of personality, Philippe appears at first glance to be a bumbling, stereotypical salaryman. He has a low opinion of himself and privately believes that he is good for nothing. He is cautious and conflict-averse, preferring to keep the peace and avoid trouble whenever possible. This attitude is closely tied to his main motivation: he is nearing retirement age and wants to complete his career without any incidents so that he can retire smoothly. Within the company, his reputation is poor, and he is looked down on and mocked by other executives and members of upper management. Despite this, when given the chance, he shows a more capable and sincere side than his usual self-deprecating manner suggests.

His role in the story is that of the administrative supervisor of the Debris Section. While the field crew performs the actual debris collection in space, Philippe handles the clerical and organizational responsibilities that keep the section functioning. He is a constant presence in the section's daily routines, providing support to the staff under his supervision. His key relationships are with the members of the Debris Section crew, whom he treats with patience, warmth, and good humor even though his standing with company leadership remains low.

Philippe's personal development over the course of the story is modest rather than dramatic. He remains a steady and reliable fixture of the section, and the series gradually reveals that his apparent uselessness is offset by his good-natured disposition and his genuine care for the people he works with. His notable abilities are primarily administrative. He manages the section's paperwork and office operations, keeping the unit organized and running smoothly. He is not a space worker and does not take part in the crew's extravehicular operations, but his years of workplace experience, his affable manner, and his quiet dependability make him an important part of the team.
