Description
Kambei Shimada is the first samurai recruited to defend Kanna Village and naturally assumes the role of leader for the group of seven. He is an experienced and wise warrior who has survived countless battles, though he takes no pride in this fact as many of his comrades fell in the Great War and he was almost always on the losing side. This painful and violent past casts a long shadow over his present, and he carries the weight of his losses with a calm but deeply somber demeanor. When Kirara Mikumari, the young priestess who seeks his aid, confesses her feelings for him, Kambei gently refuses her by stating that his heart has long since withered. This admission reveals a man who has closed himself off from emotional connection, viewing himself as too damaged and weary for such attachments.

Despite his inner desolation, Kambei is a man of his word and possesses a strong, quiet sense of honor. His primary motivation is not glory or payment, but a commitment to the task he has agreed to undertake. He is the primary strategist for the village's defense, devising most of the tactical plans, often in collaboration with his oldest friend, Shichiroji. His wisdom and impressive skill in combat are the reasons the other samurai naturally recognize him as their leader. Throughout the story, he demonstrates a pragmatic approach to warfare; while he prefers a fair fight, he does not hesitate to employ unorthodox or seemingly underhanded tactics when the situation demands it, showing a flexibility born from harsh experience.

Kambei’s key relationships reveal different facets of his character. His bond with Shichiroji is the deepest, forged on the battlefields of the Great War where they fought side-by-side. Shichiroji is his most trusted partner, and despite having built a peaceful post-war life, he readily abandons it to join Kambei once more. In contrast, his interactions with the younger samurai are initially marked by dismissal. He disregards both the idealistic Katsushiro Okamoto and the boisterous, self-proclaimed samurai Kikuchiyo, viewing them as too inexperienced and immature for the deadly task ahead. However, as the series progresses, he witnesses their growth and courage, eventually acknowledging them as true samurai and accepting them as full members of the seven. He also shares a quiet rivalry with the stoic and supremely skilled swordsman Kyuzo, though Kambei himself appears largely unconcerned with this unspoken competition.

Kambei undergoes significant development, though it is not a transformation of his core personality but a gradual rekindling of purpose and hope. The cynical warrior who claimed his heart was dead finds himself investing in the future. His most poignant character arc is his relationship with Katsushiro. Initially reluctant to mentor the young man, Kambei ultimately recognizes Katsushiro's worth and maturity. In the series' conclusion, he performs a symbolic act of passing his own sword to Katsushiro, signifying that he sees the younger man not just as a samurai, but as a worthy successor to his legacy. After the final battle, he quietly departs from Kanna Village with Shichiroji, leaving behind the community he helped save and the young samurai he helped forge.

Kambei’s notable abilities are a testament to his long and brutal career. He is a master swordsman, wielding a chokuto, a straight-bladed sword, and on occasion, he is seen using two swords at once. His skill is so extraordinary that he is capable of feats such as cutting through steel beams and large mecha, and he has performed a barehanded blade block, catching an opponent's sword by the flat of the blade. He is described as a one-man army, having single-handedly defeated over a dozen samurai, and has performed a memorable blade brake involving a falling elevator. Beyond his physical prowess, his greatest weapon is his strategic mind. He is the tactician of the group, capable of surveying a battlefield, identifying weaknesses, and devising complex plans that utilize the unique skills of each of the seven samurai to defend the village. Despite his incredible power, he is a martial pacifist, having seen so much death that he finds no pleasure or glory in fighting, only a grim necessity.
