TV-Series
Description
Kiyo Takamine, known in the original Japanese version as Kiyomaro Takamine, is the human partner to the mamodo Zatch Bell. At the start of the story, Kiyo is a fourteen-year-old junior high school student with a genius-level IQ of over 180. His remarkable intelligence, however, becomes a social burden. Because he is so much smarter than his peers, he becomes a target for teasing and harassment, which causes him to develop an introverted, apathetic, and even arrogant demeanor. He eventually begins skipping school on a regular basis, isolating himself from others his age and interacting only when necessary.

Kiyo's entire lifestyle changes dramatically when his archaeologist father sends the amnesiac mamodo child Zatch to live with him. Initially, Kiyo is irritated by Zatch's overly cheerful and clueless nature, which directly clashes with his own cynical personality. However, through their forced coexistence and the ensuing battles against other mamodos, Zatch's unwavering kindness and sense of justice begin to influence Kiyo. He starts to break out of his shell, becoming more outgoing and eventually regaining popularity in his class as he learns to connect with others. Despite this growth, Kiyo retains a notably bad temper and is easily irritated, often venting his frustrations on Zatch or his ditzy but well-meaning classmate, Suzy Mizuno.

Kiyo's primary motivation evolves alongside his partnership with Zatch. After learning about the brutal mamodo tournament where the last surviving mamodo becomes king, Zatch declares his desire to become a benevolent and kind ruler to end the violence in the mamodo world. Kiyo fully commits to this noble goal, dedicating his intellect to helping Zatch achieve victory. His role in the story is not just as a friend but as the bookkeeper, the human who reads the spells from Zatch's red book, enabling Zatch to use his lightning-based powers. He is the strategist and tactician of the team.

Key relationships are central to Kiyo's development. His bond with Zatch is the most important, as the mamodo's innocent perspective constantly challenges Kiyo's cynical worldview and forces him to care for someone other than himself. He also builds strong alliances with other mamodo-human pairs, including the celebrity Parco Folgore and his mamodo Kanchomé, the pop idol Megumi Oumi and her mamodo Tia, and the powerful Sherry Belmont and her mamodo Brago. These friendships expand his social world and provide crucial support in battles against common enemies. His relationship with his father, though initially distant, is the catalyst for the entire adventure, as it is his father who sends Zatch to him with a letter asking Kiyo to care for the boy.

Throughout the series, Kiyo undergoes significant character development. He transforms from an isolated, self-centered genius into a loyal, courageous, and empathetic leader who values his friends above all else. This development is highlighted by the acquisition of a unique ability called Answer Talker, which he gains after being killed and then revived by Zatch during a fierce battle inside the giant mamodo Faudo. This power grants Kiyo the ability to instantly know the answer to any question or problem he faces. In combat, the Answer Talker allows him to completely understand an opponent's attack, know precisely how to evade it, and formulate the perfect counter-strategy in real-time, making him an even more formidable tactician.

In addition to his natural genius and the Answer Talker ability, Kiyo's notable skills include his exceptional strategic mind, which often allows his team to defeat mamodos with far greater raw power than Zatch. He also devises practical methods to overcome Zatch's weaknesses, such as training the mamodo to look in the direction Kiyo points to aim a spell, since Zatch typically loses consciousness when casting one. Kiyo's courage, quick decision-making, and unwavering loyalty to Zatch and his friends are the true engines that drive the pair forward in their quest for the throne of the mamodo world.
