Description
Megumi Oumi is a central human character in the story, known for being the partner and book owner of the mamodo Tia. At sixteen years old, she balances the demanding life of a famous and successful teen pop idol with her secret responsibilities as a participant in the battle to decide the king of the mamodo world.
In terms of appearance, Megumi is a tall, slender young woman with long, flowing hair that is black in the original source material and often depicted as brown in the anime adaptation. Her public image is that of a pure and elegant idol, and her wardrobe reflects this, often consisting of stylish but modest outfits with green as a signature color, such as a distinctive blazer and wrap skirt ensemble. Despite her fame, her personality is grounded, kind-hearted, and charismatic. She is benevolent, always willing to help others, and rarely seen in a state of anger. Her dream of becoming a singer stemmed from a long-held wish to make people happy with her songs, and she works incredibly hard to achieve this, often to the point of being overburdened and sleep-deprived. On some occasions, she expresses a desire for a normal life, hinting at the pressure of her high-profile career.
Megumi’s central motivation is her deep care for Tia, whom she treats like a younger sister. She became Tia's partner after finding the mamodo injured and drowning in the ocean, an incident that followed Tia being betrayed by an old friend from the mamodo world. Despite Tia’s initial emotional withdrawal and refusal to trust anyone, Megumi’s persistent warmth and sincerity broke through her defenses, forging an unbreakable bond. This relationship defines her role in the story; she is a dedicated and courageous ally who chooses to fight in the dangerous mamodo battle to protect Tia and help her achieve her goals. Because Tia's spell set is primarily defensive, Megumi often finds herself in supporting roles, but she faces powerful enemies without hesitation. She and Tia are among the first official allies of the main protagonists, forming a close friendship with them after being saved from an attack by the same mamodo who had betrayed Tia. Following this, she remains a steadfast ally, providing crucial defensive and healing support in major battles.
Her key relationships beyond Tia include a close friendship with Kiyo Takamine, for whom she harbors a discreet romantic interest, often blushing in his company or being teased by Tia about her feelings. She also shares a strong, friendly bond with Kiyo's mamodo partner, Zatch, who Tia herself has a crush on.
Throughout the narrative, Megumi develops from a kind but distant idol into a courageous and determined fighter. Her initial role is defined by her relationship with Tia, but as the story progresses, her trust and friendship extend to the main group, solidifying her commitment to their shared cause of ensuring a kind king for the mamodo world. Her own hidden feelings for Kiyo also add a layer of personal, quieter development to her character, showing a vulnerable side beneath her public persona.
While Megumi herself does not cast spells, her role as a book owner is indispensable. She reads the incantations from Tia's spell book, which allows Tia to unleash her magic. Together, their notable abilities are almost entirely defensive and supportive, making them a vital asset to their allies. Their spells include powerful shields like Seoshi and Ma Seshield, the healing sword Saifogeo, and more advanced offensive and defensive spells like Chajiru Saifodon, which is powered by Tia's anger, and Chajiru Seshirudon, which is fueled by her determination to protect. Megumi is also unexpectedly skilled at judo, a physical ability that adds to her capability in dangerous situations. After the conclusion of the mamodo battle, in which Tia places fifth, Megumi returns to her career as a pop idol, though she deeply misses her mamodo partner and tearfully reads a letter from her sometime after they are separated.
