Description
Gash Bell, known as Zatch Bell in some adaptations, is the main character of his series and a six-year-old mamodo, a demon child from another world. He is short in stature with spiky blond hair that hides two tiny horns, large orange eyes with distinctive thin black lines beneath them, and typically wears a large dark cloak held by a white bow with a golden jewel. His favorite foods include yellowtail tuna, which he prefers to eat whole, and his hobbies range from playing alone to actively seeking out new friends.
Possessing a personality that is overwhelmingly cheerful and energetic, Gash Bell acts very much like a typical young child, being excitable, prone to acting before thinking, and having a huge appetite. Despite this childish demeanor, he has an extremely strong sense of justice and becomes fiercely protective of those he cares about, refusing to forgive anyone who hurts his loved ones. While he is optimistic and kind-hearted by nature, he can become entirely serious in battle, glaring at opponents with an intensity that can make them flinch. His naivety often leads him to trust others by default and be easily misled, but he values the bonds he forms above all else. He also displays a deep distaste for those who make others suffer for their own pleasure.
Gash Bell's primary motivation stems from a promise made early in his journey. After befriending a kind mamodo named Kolulu and watching her spellbook burn, ending her participation in the battle to become king, he vowed to become a "kind king" who could bring peace to the mamodo world. This goal of creating a world without unnecessary suffering drives all his actions. He is not inherently interested in power for its own sake, but rather sees becoming king as a means to protect others and spread kindness.
In the story, Gash Bell serves as one of the 100 mamodo children sent to the human world to compete in a tournament where the last one with their spellbook intact becomes the ruler of the mamodo world. His role is that of a protagonist who, alongside his human partner Kiyomaro Takamine, fights to survive against other mamodo while striving to achieve his goal of a benevolent kingship. His red spellbook, which only Kiyomaro can read, contains the lightning-based spells that Gash uses in battle.
Several key relationships define his journey. His partnership with Kiyomaro is central, as the two grow from an initially reluctant pairing into inseparable friends who help each other overcome personal flaws; Kiyomaro helps Gash become stronger, while Gash helps the cynical genius open up to others. Gash also shares a complicated relationship with his twin brother, Zeon, who erased his memories of the mamodo world out of jealousy and hatred, not knowing that their father had secretly bestowed the powerful "Baou" ability upon Gash. Other significant bonds include those with his allies: the friendly mamodo Tio, the illusion-using Kanchome, and the horse-like Umagon, among many others who form a coalition to help each other against common threats.
Throughout the series, Gash Bell undergoes significant development. Initially a weak and timid child who was looked down upon in the mamodo world and called a "crybaby," he gradually unlocks his hidden potential and demonstrates remarkable resilience, refusing to ever give up no matter how dire the situation becomes. He overcomes a deep-seated fear of his brother Zeon and later his own forgotten past, which involved being sent away from his family to live with a cruel caretaker to protect him from the corrupting influence of his immense power. By the final stages of the battle, he transforms physically and mentally, growing stronger and more muscular, gaining better control over his cloak's abilities, and ultimately emerging as the winner of the tournament, becoming the new king of the mamodo world.
Gash Bell's notable abilities center on the manipulation of electricity and lightning. His spellbook grants him a variety of attacks, beginning with Zaker, a basic burst of lightning from his mouth. As he grows, he learns more powerful spells such as the concentrated beam Zakeruga, the defensive Rashield shield, and the incredibly destructive Baou Zakeruga, which summons an enormous dragon of lightning to devour his foes. Additional spells include Rauzaruk, which boosts his physical strength, and Jikerdor, which magnetizes opponents to metal. He can also utilize advanced techniques like Teozakeru and the ultimate Shin Beruwan Baou Zakeruga, the most powerful spell shown in the series. His dark cloak also proves to be a versatile tool, granting abilities such as high-level invincibility, teleportation, flight, and the power to shape itself according to his will.
