Description
Edward Hamilton is a supporting character in Chrono Crusade, known by the nickname Elder within the Order of Magdalene. As a scientist in the Order's weapons development division, he plays a crucial role as the inventor and creator of the specialized armaments used by exorcists in their fight against demons. His physical appearance is that of an elderly man, with white hair and rather short stature, standing at 149 centimeters tall and weighing 42 kilograms. He is often seen wearing a lab coat and glasses.

Personality-wise, Elder is a complex figure defined by a stark contrast between his outward behavior and his genuine inner nature. On the surface, he presents a strong and rather perverted interest in women, often spying on the nuns or attempting to steal their undergarments, which makes him an annoyance to the female members of the convent. This behavior is essentially a running gag, portraying him as a lecherous old man who loves teasing characters like Rosette Christopher. However, this comedic exterior masks a deeply caring and paternal figure. Despite his troublesome habits, he is a highly capable and valuable inventor who is deeply devoted to the members of the Order, especially Rosette and the demon Chrono, whom he supports whenever he is able.

Elder's primary role in the story is that of a supporting craftsman and mentor. He is the quartermaster-like figure for the Order, responsible for developing the sacred bullets and other devices that the exorcists rely on. One of his notable inventions is the Gospel bullet, a powerful piece of ordnance. His motivations stem from a painful past and a sense of responsibility. He was the one who brought a girl named Mary, who would later be named Magdalene, to the Order fifty years prior to the main events. He served as a father figure to her, and it is implied that he witnessed her tragic fate alongside Chrono, seeing them both fall from Eden to the earth. This history fuels his deep-seated desire to prevent Chrono from repeating the mistakes of the past.

His key relationships are central to his character. He shares a paternal bond with Rosette and Chrono, caring for them as a surrogate family figure, and his history with Magdalene connects him directly to Chrono's tragic backstory. He also shares a significant relationship with Ewan Remington, whom he accompanies on a mission to recover Magdalene after she is taken by Chrono. Later, after being seriously wounded in battle, he attempted to stop Remington from undergoing a risky procedure to become a Legion, though he ultimately helped coordinate the successful transplant. Elder's development is revealed through his actions during critical moments. When Chrono runs wild in San Francisco, the Council decides to execute the demon, and Elder is the sole dissenting vote. This act demonstrates his unwavering loyalty and belief in Chrono, overriding the official position of his superiors. In the final battle, his abilities as a coordinator are utilized once more as he boards a ship to help manage the powerful Metatron. After the conflict concludes, he retires from active weapons development, taking on the role of nurturing and training a new generation of young developers for the Order.
