Description
Kate Valentine serves as the Head of the New York Branch of the Order of Magdalene. She is a woman of strong will and stern countenance, often appearing out of place in the field fighting demons and devils, yet she leads the order with an iron resolve to ensure the branch office operates with clockwork efficiency. Despite her severe exterior, she is a person of good heart who sincerely cares for those under her command. Her patience is frequently tested by the antics of the main protagonist, Rosette Christopher, whose tendency to cause chaotic and destructive incidents is a constant source of frustration for Kate.
Kate's primary motivation is to fulfill her duties as a leader of the Order, commanding missions and making critical decisions to protect the public from supernatural threats. She is initially distrustful of Chrono, Rosette's demon partner, viewing him as dangerous. This suspicion is so strong that she was once willing to risk eliminating him to prevent his seal from breaking, even if it meant collateral damage. However, as the story progresses and she witnesses the genuine bond between Rosette and Chrono, she gradually comes to support their partnership and accepts their unique covenant.
In her role within the story, Kate is a supporting figure who acts as a superior and mentor to Rosette. She is often seen reprimanding the young exorcist for the unnecessary destruction left in the wake of her missions, yet she consistently provides the team with information and assignments. Over time, her character is significantly influenced by Rosette's optimism and sense of hope. This influence is so profound that by the middle of the narrative, Kate begins to imitate Rosette's lines and mannerisms, showing an appreciation for her positive outlook.
Kate's relationships are central to her development. Her growing fondness for Rosette is the key catalyst for her personal change. Her relationship with Chrono evolves from stark distrust to a reluctant tolerance, born out of recognition of his importance to Rosette. She also works alongside colleagues such as Ewan Remington, with whom she discusses her concerns and strategies. A notable aspect of her character is the divergence in her development between different versions of the story. In the anime continuity, Rosette's death is a devastating blow that sharply changes Kate's character. She leaves the Order as a gloomy person, her faith in God permanently impaired as she struggles with the injustice that Rosette, whom she considers a far more devout Christian than herself, had to be the one to make the ultimate sacrifice. In contrast, the manga shows her being demoted from her position as head of the New York branch following a major failure, a change she accepts happily as she no longer wanted the role. By the end of the manga, instead of becoming gloomy, her character softens into a more laid-back and gentle person.
In terms of abilities, Kate is described as a first-class member of the Order's militia, indicating she is a strong and capable fighter. She is also a competent commander, capable of leading the Order's forces in the field and even serving as the captain of a large barrier ship named Metatron during the final battle. Her skills are sufficient to command the respect of her peers and subordinates as the head of a major branch of the Order of Magdalene.
