Description
Hajime Muroto is a fictional character who appears exclusively in the anime adaptation of Gantz. A sixteen-year-old teenage boy, he serves as a primary antagonist during the final story arc, an anime-original sequence known as the Kurono Alien mission.
Before his death and subsequent recruitment by the mysterious black sphere known as Gantz, Muroto was a juvenile delinquent who, alongside his older partner Kajimura, derived pleasure from brutally attacking homeless people with a baseball bat. This murderous hobby ultimately led to his demise when the pair was discovered and shot dead by police. Muroto's background is marked by significant trauma; he attributes his violent tendencies and disturbed mental state to a history of being beaten by his mother and often blames his own actions on others to avoid responsibility. He harbors a deep-seated fear of being the one who gets hurt first, which he claims is a primary motivator for his preemptive cruelty.
In terms of personality, Muroto is a quintessential example of a manipulative and sadistic psychopath. He displays a chilling proficiency for deception, relying heavily on his ability to act as an innocent, fragile, and timid teenager to gain the trust of others. This facade is his most effective weapon, allowing him to infiltrate the Gantz team and sow discord from within. Behind this mask, he is remorseless and takes great pleasure in killing, demonstrating a level of cunning that surpasses his more impulsive and aggressive partner. His role in the story centers on this betrayal; upon being teleported into the Gantz room, he and Kajimura join a new team of hunters. While Kurono is aware of their true nature, Muroto's convincing performance leads the rest of the group to believe he is merely a troubled youth being led astray by the older Kajimura.
His key relationships are almost exclusively defined by violence and manipulation. He is inseparable from his partner and fellow hunter, Ryuji Kajimura. Muroto allows Kajimura to believe he is the leader, while in truth, Muroto is the one who does the "dirty work" and subtly manipulates the situation to his advantage, viewing his partner as an expendable asset. Within the Gantz team, he feigns friendship and vulnerability to turn the other members against Kei Kurono, the protagonist who sees through his act. Notably, during his first Gantz mission, Muroto was responsible for killing most of his own teammates, proving that his alliance with the group is purely for personal survival and amusement.
Hajime Muroto exhibits very little character development, remaining a pure agent of chaos and evil throughout his limited screen time. His only notable change is the gradual shedding of his innocent disguise as the mission progresses and his control over the situation slips. He ultimately meets his end not in a traditional battle, but when Kurono captures him using the Y-gun, a device that teleports targets away, effectively removing him from play. In terms of abilities, Muroto possesses no supernatural powers but relies on his sadistic cunning, exceptional acting skills, and a willingness to use the advanced weaponry provided by Gantz, such as the Y-gun, against his own allies. His primary strength lies in psychological manipulation, which he uses to dismantle the team from within.
