Description
Lloyd Steam is a scientist and inventor in the alternate Victorian-era world of the film. He is the grandfather of the protagonist, James Ray Steam, and the father of Edward Steam. Lloyd conceived the revolutionary steam power device known as the Steam Ball, which he and Edward successfully developed after discovering a pure mineral water source in Iceland capable of generating immense, nearly limitless steam energy. He is an idealist who believes that scientific advancement should serve humanity and be used for peaceful, constructive purposes. His motivation stems from a deep conviction that an invention without an ethical philosophy behind it is dangerous. This philosophy puts him at odds with his son Edward, who views science as a tool for power and control. Lloyd intended the Steam Castle, their ultimate creation powered by three Steam Balls, to be a flying amusement park—a symbol of wonder and joy. Edward rejected this vision as a fairy tale and instead built the castle as a flying military fortress for the O'Hara Foundation.

Lloyd's role in the story is that of a moral counterweight and catalyst for Ray's journey. After discovering that the O'Hara Foundation intends to use the technology for weapons, he becomes determined to sabotage their plans. He sends one of the Steam Balls to his grandson Ray in Manchester, along with schematics and instructions to guard it, kickstarting the plot. Throughout the film, Lloyd is captured by O'Hara agents but escapes, working to undermine the Steam Castle from within. He reveals a hidden armory filled with Edward's steam-powered war machines to Ray, forcing the young inventor to confront the moral dilemma of scientific responsibility. Lloyd's key relationships are with his son Edward and his grandson Ray. The conflict with Edward drives much of the plot: their differing visions for steam technology represent a clash between altruism and ambition. With Ray, Lloyd acts as a mentor, guiding him toward understanding that science must be used ethically. Their relationship is strained but ultimately loving, as Ray comes to appreciate his grandfather's principles.

The character undergoes significant development, moving from a determined saboteur to a figure of reconciliation. In a moment of rage, Lloyd shoots Edward during a confrontation in the castle's control room, but Edward survives due to his cyborg body. Later, as the castle threatens to explode over London, Lloyd and Edward reconcile, working together to halt the machine. After the castle detonates safely, Lloyd is shown in the ending montage introducing Ray to the concept of electricity before dying. His death marks the passing of an era of pure scientific idealism. Lloyd possesses no superhuman abilities, but he is an exceptionally brilliant engineer and inventor, capable of designing and building advanced steam-powered machinery. He is also resourceful and physically resilient, as shown by his ability to escape captivity and navigate the treacherous interior of the Steam Castle. His most notable ability is his unwavering moral clarity and his willingness to act on his convictions, even at great personal cost.
