Description
Midvalley the Hornfreak is a member of the Gung-Ho Guns, a group of elite assassins serving Legato Bluesummers and, by extension, the antagonist Millions Knives. He first appears in the anime performing with his band at a saloon in Jeneora Rock, shortly before Legato eliminates the Roderick Thieves. From then on, he acts as Legato’s personal assistant and is present during key events such as the destruction of Augusta and the confrontation in LR Town. In the anime, his background is not explored in depth, but the manga reveals that he and his band originally killed for money until Knives slaughtered his companions and took Midvalley into the Gung-Ho Guns. In the manga, Midvalley harbors resentment toward both Legato and Knives and attempts to kill Legato, only to be killed himself; his body is later used by Legato to attack another Gung-Ho Gun member.
Midvalley is a tall, charismatic, and suave individual. He typically wears a black double-breasted suit with a pink dress shirt in the anime, while the manga depicts him in a white single-breasted suit. He is calm, cool, and generally affable, but he remains loyal to Legato and Knives until the end. Despite his composed demeanor, he shows signs of inner conflict: he admits to Vash that those who serve Knives have no free thought or free will, and he appears genuinely troubled by the suffering caused by other Gung-Ho Guns. He seems to possess a detached respect for Vash’s willingness to take blows for innocent people. In the anime, his motivation is rooted in a belief that Knives is an all‑powerful being worthy of worship. In the manga, his loyalty is more coerced, and his personal dislike for his superiors eventually drives him to rebellion.
His primary weapon is a tenor saxophone named Sylvia, which he plays with exceptional skill. The saxophone is capable of producing devastating sound waves that can synchronize with human pain receptors, causing immense physical damage or even death. He can also use the sound waves to create defensive barriers strong enough to deflect bullets. In addition to its sonic capabilities, the saxophone houses hidden machine guns that can be activated in combat. After Vash disables these guns with a ricochet shot in the anime, Midvalley chooses to overload and detonate the instrument, killing himself rather than accepting mercy. He is also able to neutralize sounds by playing counter‑frequencies.
Midvalley’s role in the story is that of a high‑ranking Gung‑Ho Gun who serves directly under Legato. He introduces the other Gung‑Ho Guns on Jeneora Rock and remains by Legato’s side through several major plot points. In the anime, he is the final Gung‑Ho Gun Vash fights before confronting Legato himself. His character development is subtle: while he never breaks from his allegiance, his internal unease with the violence and his recognition of his own lack of autonomy give him a tragic dimension. The manga offers a slightly fuller arc, where his attempt to act on his resentment leads to his death. Notable abilities beyond his sonic mastery include his charisma and his capacity to blend music with deadly combat, making him one of the more memorable and complex members of the Gung‑Ho Guns.
