Description
Gorōta Kumashima, most commonly known by his nickname Kuma, is a recurring human character in the Yo-kai Watch anime and games. He is a classmate and close friend of the protagonist, Nate Adams, and is a student in Class 5-2 at Springdale Elementary School. In English-language adaptations, his name is changed to Barnaby Bernstein, though he is almost universally referred to by the nickname Bear.

Physically, Kuma has a robust and chubby build, which makes him appear intimidating at first glance. His black hair is styled into a short ponytail, and he has distinctive rings around his eyes. A small bandage or plaster is often seen on his cheek, adding to his tough-guy image. His typical outfit consists of a blue sukajan, a type of varsity jacket, worn over a white T-shirt, paired with shorts. This appearance is a deliberate contrast to his actual personality.

Despite his formidable exterior, Kuma has a friendly and surprisingly sensitive nature. He is known for being gentle and kind-hearted, often serving as a voice of reason or a source of emotional support within his friend group. A defining trait is his emotional vulnerability; he can easily burst into tears, which stands in stark contrast to his tough appearance. He also has a great love for food.

Kuma's role in the story is primarily as a supporting character and one of Nate's two best friends, alongside Eddie Archer, forming a central trio of human boys at the heart of many everyday adventures. While Nate is the one who can see and interact with Yo-kai, Kuma represents the normal world. He is often present when Yo-kai mischief occurs, reacting to the strange events in a way that highlights how ordinary people perceive supernatural phenomena—usually with confusion or fear, as he cannot see the Yo-kai causing the problems. His personality and friendship with Eddie were carried over from the original video games into the anime adaptation as core character elements.

Key relationships define much of his involvement in the series. His friendship with Nate and Eddie is his most significant connection. He is also mentioned to have a younger sister named Bearmie, who lives in America. Throughout the series, Kuma does not undergo significant character development or gain any special abilities, as his primary function is to serve as a relatable human anchor to Nate's extraordinary life. He remains a constant and loyal presence, demonstrating that a person can be both tough and tender.
