Description
Grove, also known as Groveck Marcus, is a member of the Marcus Brothers, a family of vampire hunters. He is distinguished by his frail and sickly physical condition. In the anime film Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Grove is depicted as being bedridden, with pale skin, white hair, and a gaunt appearance that suggests a long-term illness from which he has suffered since birth. This physical weakness, however, belies his true nature as the most powerful member of the group.
His primary ability is a form of astral projection. By injecting himself with a specific serum, Grove can induce a seizure that forces his spirit to leave his physical body. In this spectral form, he becomes immune to physical attacks and can fly. He wields powerful offensive capabilities, most notably firing energy blasts or beams of mystical light from his ethereal form, and can cause massive destruction. This power comes at a great cost, as each use of his ability significantly drains his life force and accelerates his physical decline.
While the Marcus Brothers are a ruthless group of bounty hunters, Grove’s personality in the film is notably more gentle and introspective than his siblings. He is portrayed as a kind and caring individual who is deeply protective of his family, particularly his fellow hunter Leila, towards whom he is very supportive. He often acts as a voice of prudence and caution, preferring to avoid unnecessary conflict and urging thoughtfulness to keep the group safe. Unlike his brothers Borgoff, Nolt, and Kyle, who are more aggressive and eager for violence, Grove is more reserved and less interested in fighting.
Grove's role in the story is that of the group’s secret weapon, a last resort used when they encounter overwhelming supernatural opposition. He is a key asset in the Marcus Brothers' pursuit of the vampire Baron Meier Link and the human Charlotte Elbourne. His loyalty to his family is paramount, and he is willing to sacrifice his own health to protect them and help them achieve their goal.
His most significant relationship is with Leila, the only other female member of the hunting party. While his brothers often treat Leila with a degree of callousness, Grove is consistently kind and protective towards her. The film strongly implies that his feelings for her may go beyond simple friendship or sibling-like affection, hinting that he may be in love with her. Leila, in turn, seems to trust and confide in Grove more than any of the other Marcus brothers.
Grove undergoes a tragic character arc that culminates in his death. As the pursuit of Meier Link intensifies, the group faces increasingly dangerous foes, including the mutant Barbarois. To help his family overcome these threats, Grove is forced to use his serum and project his spirit multiple times in rapid succession. His body, already ravaged by his illness, cannot withstand the repeated strain. In the climax of the film, after using his powers to save Leila and his brothers, his physical form gives out, leading to his death. His sacrifice is a pivotal moment that underscores his deep care for his family and highlights the tragic cost of his incredible abilities.
