Born on July 9, 1961, in Munich, Germany, he was raised in the city and developed an interest in performing arts from an early age. He pursued formal training in acting in both Germany and the United States, where he attended the University of California and majored in film studies, a period during which he also became fluent in English.

Halm began his on-screen acting career with the lead role in the Italian film Ernesto, directed by Salvatore Samperi. He gained wider recognition in Germany for his performance as the 19-year-old lead in the ZDF television mini-series Der Fall Mauritius, which brought him significant public attention. He went on to work with numerous directors in drama and crime genres and became a series regular on the popular SAT1 show Für alle Fälle Stefanie during the 1990s.

While his on-screen career is notable, Martin Halm is particularly renowned for his contributions as a voice actor in German dubbing, becoming a familiar voice to audiences of international film and anime. He is the younger brother of voice actor Florian Halm, with whom he has shared voice roles. In the early German episodes of the long-running anime series One Piece, Martin Halm was also involved in dialogue direction alongside other voice actors.

Halm is most widely recognized for his long-standing association with the One Piece franchise. He is the second German voice for the character Tony Tony Chopper, the doctor of the Straw Hat Pirates, taking over the role from his brother Florian Halm starting from episode 263 of the television series. He has voiced Chopper in a vast number of One Piece productions, including the television specials One Piece 3D2Y: Overcoming Ace's Death! Luffy's Pledge to His Friends, One Piece: Episode of Chopper - The Miracle Winter Cherry Blossom, and One Piece Episode of Merry: Mō Hitori no Nakama no Monogatari, as well as films such as One Piece: Take Aim! The Pirate Baseball King, One Piece: Mega Mecha Soldier of Karakuri Castle, One Piece Stampede, and One Piece Film Red. His portrayal of Chopper also extends to spin-offs like the One Piece: Strohhut-Theater, where he voices multiple variations of the character, including Chopperman.

In addition to Chopper, Halm provides the German voice for another pivotal character in One Piece: the powerful and influential pirate "Red-Haired" Shanks. He has voiced Shanks in the main anime series as well as in several films, including One Piece Film: Red, One Piece: The Dead End Race, and the television specials One Piece: Episode of East Blue. His work on One Piece Film Red is particularly notable, as he voiced both Shanks and Tony Tony Chopper in the same film.

Beyond the world of One Piece, Martin Halm's voice work in anime includes a significant role in the series Forest of Piano, where he voiced the character Youichirou Amamiya. His versatility as a voice actor is further demonstrated by his work on other anime titles, contributing to the German adaptations of series and films such as Rurouni Kenshin, Detective Conan, Hunter x Hunter, and Monster.

Through his extensive body of work, particularly his dual role in the immensely popular One Piece series, Martin Halm has established himself as a prominent and respected figure in German anime dubbing. His ability to bring distinct characters to life, from the energetic and lovable Chopper to the commanding and calm Shanks, has made him a significant contributor to the German-language experience of these stories for a wide audience.
