Description
Wakana Sakai, a serious and reserved high school student, lives with her father, Keisuke Sakai, and a pet cat named Dora. Her mother, Mahiru Sakai, passed away during Wakana's final year of middle school. Mahiru concealed her illness to avoid disrupting Wakana's entrance exams, leaving Wakana burdened by deep regret over missed goodbyes and cold final interactions.

Physically, Wakana has black hair often in a high ponytail with a small ahoge and strands framing her forehead, brown eyes, and fair skin. She resembles her mother, though her hair is slightly shorter than Mahiru's straight-banged style. She wears a school uniform: a white blouse, blue ribbon, blue dress, navy socks with white stripes, and brown shoes.

Wakana possesses significant musical talent in piano and singing, inherited from her music prodigy and composer mother. Following Mahiru's death, Wakana withdrew from music and avoided clubs. She initially rejected Konatsu Miyamoto's invitations to join the new choir club, refusing to sing due to unresolved grief and guilt, manifesting as emotional detachment and isolation.

A pivotal moment occurs when her father reveals Mahiru's handwritten notes for an unfinished song meant for Wakana. This discovery prompts her to join Konatsu's club, aiming to complete her mother's song, "Radiant Melody," for closure. Supported by friends like Konatsu and Sawa Okita, Wakana gradually opens up emotionally, confronting her past. She performs the completed song and participates in choir activities, including taking the role of the "Pink WestStop Ranger" in a school performance.

Her relationships drive her growth. Konatsu and Sawa persistently reach out, helping her transition from an "Ineffectual Loner" to a more engaged individual. Her bond with her father remains supportive, though her primary emotional struggle revolves around her mother's absence. Wakana values promises deeply, intensified by regret over her unkind words to her mother.

In the official light novel sequel, "Budding, Shining, and Sometimes Singing," set a decade later, Wakana mentors a troubled student, Yukine. Recognizing parallels between Yukine's isolation and her own past, Wakana shares her journey of overcoming guilt and accepting friendship. This reflects her commitment to helping others navigate isolation, emphasizing shared experiences can alleviate feelings of uniqueness in adversity.

Additional traits include her love for cats and cakes. Moments of unexpected airheadedness contrast her serious nature, like her detailed explanation about types of dogeza. Her name, derived from the kanji for "harmony" (和) and "play music, complete" (奏), reflects her arc from discord to musical and emotional reconciliation.
