Description
Hakuryu is a small white dragon with red eyes who serves as both a companion and a vital form of transportation for the Sanzo party. Known as Jeep in the original Japanese version of the anime due to trademark considerations surrounding his vehicle transformation, his name literally translates to white dragon. He is the cherished pet and constant companion of Cho Hakkai, and the two share a bond of obvious affection and mutual care. In his natural state, Hakuryu is roughly the size of a house cat, with a long serpentine neck, a mane of hair, and wings that are more mammalian in structure, resembling those of a bat. His preferred perch is on Hakkai’s shoulder, where he often remains while the group is at rest or traveling on foot.
Hakuryu's primary and most crucial ability is his transformation into a large, dark green jeep. In this form, he carries the four members of the Sanzo party across their long journey, functioning as their primary mode of transportation. The jeep is designed with the driver's side on the right and is often depicted with a spare tire cover featuring a large yin-yang symbol. Hakuryu is not merely a passive vehicle, however. In his small dragon form, he is capable of fighting, using tactics such as blinding enemies with his wings and attempting to scratch at their eyes. He can also breathe fire, which he has used defensively to support Hakkai's chi-based barriers in battle. Beyond his combat contributions, he demonstrates a fierce loyalty to the group, as seen when he comes to the aid of Son Goku when Goku was injured and unable to fight.
Personality-wise, Hakuryu is portrayed as a loyal and spirited creature. He communicates through a series of chirps and squeaks that Hakkai appears to understand without difficulty. While he is affectionate and devoted to his master, he is known to answer primarily to Hakkai, suggesting a deep-seated trust and specific bond between the two. Nonetheless, he is a reliable member of the team and comes to the aid of the others when they are in genuine peril, proving his value as the fifth member of the group. His role in the story is that of a silent witness and a steadfast support, carrying the heroes across vast distances and occasionally intervening in combat. Without him, the journey of the Sanzo party would be impossible, as he bears the burden of their travels on his back.
Regarding his background, there are connections drawn between Hakuryu and the divine realm. In the prequel series Saiyuki Gaiden, which explores the past lives of the main characters, Hakuryu is implied to be the reincarnation of Goujun, a god of heaven. In that previous existence, Goujun was the commanding officer of Kenren, who is the past life of Sha Gojyo. This adds a layer of historical depth to the relationships within the group, suggesting that the bonds between the characters and even their mascot predate their current journey. His fundamental motivation stems from his devotion to Hakkai and, by extension, to the safety and progress of the entire Sanzo party. Throughout the series, he does not undergo significant personal development, as his role is more consistent as a faithful companion, but his presence is a constant source of subtle support and, on occasion, unexpected combat assistance.
