TV-Series
Description
Kanzeon Bosatsu, often called the Merciful Goddess, is one of the five great Bodhisattvas residing in Heaven and is known as an administrator of mercy and compassion. Despite this lofty title, the character is defined by a personality that is vulgar, self-righteous, and frequently bored. Kanzeon is broad-minded to an extreme, displaying an arrogant side and a notorious sexual hobby. In the Japanese version, the character uses the masculine pronoun ore, which conveys a rough and presumptuous attitude. Kanzeon firmly believes that things which never change are boring and has a deep-seated love for observing entertaining performances, often preferring to watch conflicts unfold rather than interfere directly. However, this detached demeanor is not absolute; beneath the masculine and arrogant exterior lies a genuine softness. This is most evident when Kanzeon embraces the grieving Goku after the death of Konzen Douji and takes the blame for causing him so much pain, revealing a heavy sense of consciousness and guilt for the suffering the character has enabled.
Physically, Kanzeon Bosatsu's depiction varies between media. In the original manga, the character is portrayed as a tall hermaphrodite with a mixture of masculine and feminine traits, including a face that blends both sexes and a red chakra mark like other gods. The anime adaptations give no indication of the character being anything other than female. Kanzeon has long black-silver or blue-tinged hair tied in a high ponytail and violet eyes similar to those of Konzen Douji and his reincarnation, Genjo Sanzo. The character wears a long white dress-like robe, which in the manga has a see-through top portion, a golden belt, choker, armlets, and anklets. A sun or lotus-like pendant on a chain rests on the chest.
As for abilities, Kanzeon Bosatsu possesses immense divine power, likely making the character one of the strongest beings in the series, with power that may rival a war god. During the events of Saiyuki Gaiden, Kanzeon displays enough raw strength to knock out Son Goku after he transforms into his uncontrollable Seiten Taisei form. Like Konzen and Sanzo, Kanzeon has the unique ability to create and replace the power limiter, or diadem, that suppresses Goku's true power, explaining that only gods can provide this restraint. In the main storyline, during the Rikudou arc, Kanzeon demonstrates more esoteric heavenly powers by performing a supernatural blood transfusion. After sucking blood from Sha Gojyo through a kiss, Kanzeon transfers it to a fatally injured Genjo Sanzo, even though their blood types are incompatible under normal circumstances.
Kanzeon Bosatsu's role in the story is primarily as an orchestrator and observer from Heaven. The character is the aunt of Konzen Douji and the one responsible for bringing the heretic child who would be named Goku to Heaven. Bored with the monotony of celestial life, Kanzeon took in the interesting creature and left all responsibility for him to Konzen, hoping to alleviate the boredom of both. In the present timeline, Kanzeon is the deity who orders the Sanzo Ikkou to travel west to investigate the source of the minus wave that is causing youkai to go berserk. Throughout their journey, Kanzeon watches over them, referring to the group as not having changed one bit in five hundred years.
The character's key relationships are complex and long-spanning. The relationship with nephew Konzen Douji is particularly central. Both were dying of boredom in Heaven until Goku arrived, and Kanzeon thrust the boy into Konzen's care, asking him if he could continue to be that little kid's sun. Their relationship is oddly antagonistic; Konzen does not get along with his aunt and once punched Kanzeon for knocking out the transformed Goku, only for Kanzeon to kick him in retaliation and tell him not to regret his choices. After Konzen's death and reincarnation as Genjo Sanzo, Kanzeon sometimes refers to the monk by his past name, suggesting a lingering connection to the nephew. The deity also shares a deep, long-standing bond with Jiroushin, the loyal assistant who always reminds Kanzeon to do paperwork and the right thing. Jiroushin is often seen playing Shogi with Kanzeon, and other characters, like Kenren, refer to them as an old married couple from a sitcom.
Kanzeon Bosatsu's development is most prominently explored in the prequel Saiyuki Gaiden. Initially motivated by sheer boredom, Kanzeon watches as Goku forms deep bonds with Konzen, Tenpou, and Kenren. When Heaven moves against them, Kanzeon refrains from interfering, insisting that the ensuing battle belongs to the four of them. After Konzen, Tenpou, and Kenren are killed while helping Goku escape to the lower world, Kanzeon confronts the catatonic Goku, asking if he will waste their sacrifices. When Goku injures the deity, Kanzeon responds not with anger but with a warm embrace, expressing remorse for making him suffer. Taking on a maternal or guardian role in the place of Konzen, Kanzeon chooses to erase Goku's painful memories of Heaven. In a final act of personal, selfish mercy, the character cannot bring herself to seal away Goku's name along with the rest of his memories. From that point onward, for five hundred years, Kanzeon puts heart and soul into watching over how Goku and the others live their lives, showing that what began as a cure for boredom transformed into a deep, if complicated, investment in their survival.
