Description
Eikichi Onizuka is the central character of Great Teacher Onizuka. He is a twenty-two-year-old who begins the story as a man with a sordid past and a seemingly shallow goal: to become the greatest high school teacher in Japan. His background is that of a legendary former member of the Oni-Baku, a feared biker gang from the streets of Shonan, where he and his best friend, Ryuji Danma, were notorious for their fighting prowess. Despite his fierce reputation, Onizuka is not academically gifted; he attended a fifth-rate university called Eurasia College and only managed to graduate by resorting to cheating. His initial motivation for becoming a teacher is entirely superficial, sparked when he sees a beautiful high school student with an unattractive, middle-aged teacher, leading him to believe the profession is a good way to meet young women.
On the surface, Onizuka presents a personality that is vulgar, lazy, perverted, and seemingly simple-minded. He is openly obsessed with pornography, often speaks of wanting to marry a teenage bride, and his apartment is notoriously messy. However, this crude exterior masks a deeply sincere, loyal, and remarkably perceptive individual. Despite his constant failures and unprofessional behavior, he possesses an unshakeable moral code. He despises anyone who bullies the weak or betrays another's trust, and he is driven by a genuine desire to help his students, not with their grades, but with the real problems they face in life, such as bullying, family breakdown, and suicidal thoughts. His teaching philosophy is action-oriented; he believes in confronting problems head-on, often through dangerous, illegal, or wildly unconventional methods, to teach an unforgettable lesson.
In the story, Onizuka achieves his unlikely goal and becomes the homeroom teacher of Class 3-4 at Holy Forest Academy, a class infamous for psychologically tormenting and driving away all their previous teachers. Despite their attempts to humiliate and fire him, he refuses to give up on them. His role is not to be a traditional educator but a catalyst for change, using his unique background as a former delinquent to understand, challenge, and ultimately protect his students from the failures of the adults around them, including other teachers and their own parents. He is often at odds with the school's administration, who find his methods too radical, but he consistently proves his worth by resolving crises that traditional authority figures cannot.
Key relationships define his journey. His lifelong best friend, Ryuji Danma, provides a stable counterpoint to Onizuka's chaotic life and often offers a place to crash and a listening ear. Azusa Fuyutsuki, a fellow teacher at the academy, initially views Onizuka as a disgrace but gradually comes to respect and develop feelings for his unwavering integrity and dedication. Among his students, he builds powerful bonds with individuals like Noboru Yoshikawa, a suicidal boy he saves early on, and Urumi Kanzaki, a brilliant but malicious student who later becomes one of his staunchest allies. Despite his perverted talk, his relationships with women are marked by a strange and genuine respect; he famously remains a virgin and refuses to take advantage of women or his students, viewing them instead as people to be protected and guided.
Throughout the narrative, Onizuka undergoes a subtle but significant development. While his core personality remains a boisterous and uncouth force of nature, his initial selfish motivation for becoming a teacher transforms into a deep, selfless, and life-defining calling. He evolves from a simple delinquent with a pipe dream into a man who finds his true purpose and identity in fighting for the well-being of his students, confirming his self-proclaimed title of Great Teacher Onizuka. His notable abilities are a direct extension of his past. He is a phenomenal fighter, holding a black belt in karate, and a highly skilled driver, particularly on his motorcycle. His real talent, however, is his ability to see through lies and psychological defenses to the core of a student's pain. He combines physical prowess, emotional intuition, and a complete lack of regard for social convention to solve problems, whether by literally driving a car through a wall to reach a trapped student or staging an elaborate, dangerous prank to teach a lesson about trust.
