Description
Nanami Kiryuu is the younger sister of Touga Kiryuu and a supporting character in Revolutionary Girl Utena. She is a first-year student in the junior high division of Othori Academy, approximately thirteen years old. Nanami is a prototypical queen bee, known for her proud, haughty demeanor and fierce competitiveness. She is deeply concerned with maintaining her social status and believes she deserves the best of everything, particularly the attention of her older brother.
Her most defining trait is an intense, obsessive love for Touga. She views any girl who receives his attention as a threat and targets them with malicious schemes. She initially sees Utena Tenjou and Anthy Himemiya as her primary rivals and attempts to humiliate them through various devious plots. Beyond her cruelty, Nanami is driven by a deep need for validation, both of her own worth and of her exclusive bond with Touga. This need often exposes her vulnerabilities and insecurities, revealing that her arrogance is a mask for a fragile sense of self.
Nanami serves as both a comedic antagonist and a recurring source of thematic exploration in the story. Her antics provide contrast to the more serious duels, and several standalone episodes are dedicated to her, often placing her in bizarre, metaphorical situations that examine her personality in a sympathetic light. Her role changes after Touga is wounded in a duel with Utena; she temporarily assumes the position of Student Council President and adopts a bright yellow uniform, which allows her to briefly step out of her brother's shadow and exercise her own authority.
Her relationship with Touga is the central force in her life. While she is constantly seeking his affection and approval, Touga remains distant and manipulative, rarely returning her feelings in an equal measure. This one-sided dynamic fuels much of her jealousy and erratic behavior. She also has a younger follower named Mitsuru Tsuwabuki, who is devoted to her, but Nanami largely treats him as a servant rather than an equal. Later in the series, a major development occurs when Nanami discovers that her blood type differs from Touga's and her parents', leading her to believe they are not biologically related. This revelation initially seems to validate her romantic feelings for him, but it also precipitates a crisis when she witnesses what she believes to be an incestuous relationship between other siblings, causing her to recoil from the implications. After this, she chooses to step away from the dueling arena and the Student Council, returning to her former uniform and essentially graduating from the narrative's central conflict.
In duels, Nanami is a skilled fencer who uses a dual-blade fighting style, wielding a scimitar as her primary weapon and a dagger as a secondary one. She is athletic and capable in combat, though her emotional state can undermine her confidence in critical moments. Despite her role as a foil and a source of comedy, Nanami undergoes a subtle arc of development that moves her from a one-note antagonist obsessed with her brother to a character who consciously rejects the more destructive aspects of her world, choosing to leave it behind.
