Description
Anthy Himemiya is a central figure in the story, known as the Rose Bride, a mysterious and seemingly passive student at Ohtori Academy. She is a girl of short stature with a distinctive appearance, characterized by her long, voluminous purple hair usually tied up, pale green eyes, and notably brown skin, which contrasts with most other characters. She often wears a pair of round glasses and a small red bindi on her forehead, giving her a demure and studious look. As the Rose Bride, she wears a striking red dress that symbolizes her role as a prize in the dueling game.

Anthy’s background is shrouded in tragedy and myth. Long before the events at the academy, she lived with her brother, Dios, a prince who devoted himself to saving others. When the world’s endless demands weakened Dios to the point of death, an angry mob blamed Anthy, calling her a witch. To protect her brother, she faced the mob alone and was stabbed by a metaphorical million swords of hatred. This event caused her to seal away her pain and emotions, becoming the Rose Bride. Her brother was also split in two, with his noble aspect lost and his corrupted form becoming Akio Ohtori, the academy's acting chairman.

On the surface, Anthy’s personality is that of a quiet, docile, and almost emotionless girl. She is unfailingly polite, soft-spoken, and obedient to whoever holds the Rose Bride ring, acting as the perfect, subservient fiancée. She rarely shows distress or anger, often wearing a placid, almost vacant smile even in the face of mistreatment. This behavior leads many of her duelists to see her as an object or a tool rather than a person, believing she has no will of her own. However, this passivity is largely a mask. Beneath her compliant exterior lies a deeply complex, cynical, and wounded individual. She is profoundly distrustful of others, having learned that people are primarily self-interested and will readily abuse her in their pursuit of power. This has made her manipulative, passive-aggressive, and capable of taking subtle, often humorous revenge on those who mistreat her, such as transforming a tormentor into a cow. Her true feelings are frequently externalized not by her own words, but by the actions of her pet monkey, Chuchu.

Anthy’s primary motivation is self-preservation born from a deep sense of guilt and resignation. She believes she is a witch responsible for her brother’s fall and accepts her eternal punishment as the Rose Bride. She remains loyal to her brother Akio, who subjects her to emotional and sexual abuse, out of a mixture of guilt, familiarity, and the belief that she cannot escape her fate. She has internalized the world’s hatred and sees no hope for a different existence. Her role in the story is to be the catalyst for the dueling game, the prize that all duelists fight to possess in order to obtain the power of Dios to revolutionize the world. She is the damsel in distress, but the narrative constantly questions the validity of this role.

Her key relationships are the core of the narrative. Her relationship with Utena Tenjou, a girl who wishes to be a prince, is the most transformative. Utena is the first person to treat her not as an object, but as a friend, and vows to protect her. While initially, Anthy plays the part of the passive damsel as part of Akio’s scheme, Utena’s genuine and persistent kindness begins to break through her emotional numbness. This creates a conflict within Anthy, who both loves Utena for her purity and resents her for it, feeling sullied by comparison. In contrast, her relationship with her brother, Akio Ohtori, is one of profound manipulation and abuse. He is the architect of her suffering, using her as a tool in his dueling game and subjecting her to his will. Despite this, she remains bound to him by guilt and a twisted sense of loyalty.

Over the course of the story, Anthy undergoes a significant, if subtle, development. Her seemingly robotic obedience begins to show cracks as she witnesses Utena’s unwavering commitment to her. The climax of her arc comes when Utena, having been defeated and betrayed, is seemingly lost forever. In that moment, Anthy finally breaks free from her role. She directly defies and abandons her brother, calling off the dueling game and rejecting the world of Ohtori Academy. She leaves to find Utena, taking control of her own destiny for the first time, symbolizing her own revolution of self-liberation from the prison of her past and her prescribed role.

Anthy possesses a number of notable, if vaguely defined, abilities as a witch. Her primary power is housing the Sword of Dios within her own body. During a duel, she enters a trance and the sword emerges from her chest, allowing her champion to draw it and wield its immense power. She also demonstrates the ability to control and communicate with animals, to alter her own form or the perception of her form, and even to transform others, as seen in her petty revenges. She can manipulate memories, grow plants like green roses, and perform other small feats of magic, often for comedic or unsettling effect.
